Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response responds to the task only minimally and fails to meet the required 150-word minimum, falling short by two words (not counting words copied directly from the prompt). The overview and reporting of main features are very fragmented and fail to clearly summarise the data shown in the graph. The student attempts to mention overall trends, such as the rise in total visitors and cruise ship passengers, but the description is confused and lacks clear selection or comparison of key data points. To move to a higher band, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is fully met and present a clear overview of the main trends with accurate data selected from the visual.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
Information and ideas are not arranged coherently. The text lacks logical organisation and clear progression throughout, resulting in a disjointed structure. Paragraphing is not used effectively, as sentences are clumped into short, disconnected paragraphs that do not guide the reader smoothly through the summary. Furthermore, inappropriate transitional markers like 'Firstly' and 'Furthermore' are misused, and personal opinions or irrelevant descriptive sentences at the end ('This place is very intresting for visitors...') further disrupt the logical flow. To improve, the writer needs to structure the response into a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, using cohesive devices accurately to link ideas logically.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, employing a very limited range of words that are frequently misused or spelled incorrectly, such as 'intresting' and 'gradully'. The student attempts simple descriptive language like 'ratio from one million to 3.5 million increase', but word choices lack precision and fail to convey the graphical information effectively. There are noticeable errors in word forms and spelling that occasionally strain the reader's understanding. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range to include more precise, academic terms suited to describing data trends, such as nouns and verbs indicating change (e.g., 'fluuctuate', 'surge', 'decline').
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writing displays a very limited range of structures, with frequent grammatical errors that often distort meaning. There are persistent errors in verb tenses and forms, such as 'This graph illustrate', missing auxiliary verbs ('the visitors staying on different places'), and incorrect prepositions ('visit on this place'). Simple sentence patterns dominate, and attempts at more complex structures are faulty and unreliable. Punctuation and article usage also show frequent inaccuracies throughout the text. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and accurate tense usage when reporting past data.
