Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview and reporting the main features of the chart, such as the overall upward trajectory and the different trends for visitors staying on cruise ships versus those staying on the island. However, some aspects are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, the overview incorrectly claims that cruise ship visitors increased while island visitors 'gradually decreased over the years', whereas island visitors actually fluctuated and ended at the same level as 2010. Furthermore, several data points contain minor inaccuracies, such as stating the starting figure for cruise visitors was 0.5 million in 2011 instead of 0.25 million in 2010. Nevertheless, a clear picture of the data is presented overall, satisfying the requirements for this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text has a coherent overall arrangement with a logical division into paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the different tourist categories. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Looking first at', 'Turning to the visitors staying on island', and 'After that'. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty due to missing articles and abrupt transitions, such as 'It then, increased' and the lack of a clear boundary before the final sentence about the total. Referencing is generally adequate, but paragraphing could be improved to better separate distinct ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic trends using words such as 'illustrates', 'gradually increased', and 'decreased'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary and phrasing, but there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'number of visitors stayed on cruise ships were increased' and writing 'millions' with an 's' after a numerical value ('0.5 millions'). Spelling is generally accurate, but awkward phrasing like 'by end of the year it reached to 1.5 millions again' demonstrates limitations that prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and time markers like 'between 2010 and 2017'. There are, however, several errors in grammar and punctuation. Punctuation errors include missing spaces after full stops ('years. It is also', '0.5 millions. It then'). Grammatical errors involve passive voice and verb form mistakes ('visitors stayed on cruise ships were increased'), missing articles ('number of visitors', 'total number'), and incorrect prepositions ('reaching to', 'reached to'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede overall communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning.
