Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some key features of the graph while containing inaccurate data reporting and underdeveloped comparisons. The writer attempts to summarize the main trends, such as the overall rise in visitors and the changing numbers for cruise ships versus island stays. However, there are significant misinterpretations of the figures provided in the chart, such as stating that the island stays 'remained constant till 2017' when the data shows fluctuations, and describing visitors as 'backpackers'. Furthermore, the overview is overly simplistic and fails to clearly highlight the most striking overall trends. To move to a higher band, the response must accurately report the data without misrepresenting the values and provide a clearer, more comprehensive overview of the main trends and notable comparisons shown in the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organization evident in the division of paragraphs, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. The essay begins with an introduction and a brief attempt at an overview, followed by body paragraphs dedicated to different categories of tourists. However, cohesive devices are sometimes misused or mechanical, such as the repetitive use of phrases like 'To commence with' and 'Furthermore', which do not always logically connect the ideas. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the relationships between data points. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, you should ensure that cohesive devices are used more naturally and varied appropriately. Developing a more logical flow between sentences and paragraphs will help the reader navigate the data comparison more smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer makes several noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as using 'elaborates about' instead of 'illustrates', 'intreasted' for 'interested', and 'insular region' or 'backpackers' to describe tourists staying on the island. There are also spelling errors like 'preffered' and 'milion' which detract from the overall quality of the lexical resource. Although some attempts are made to use less common vocabulary, inaccuracies in word form and choice frequently occur. To achieve a higher band, you need to expand your vocabulary range, use precise terms related to data reporting (such as 'illustrates', 'fluctuated', or 'rose'), and eliminate spelling errors by carefully proofreading your work.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies, inappropriate prepositions, and article errors, such as in 'total number of visitors were drastically increased' and 'the travellers who preffered to stay on island was double then who were staying'. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth communication. To improve your grammatical score, you should focus on mastering basic sentence structures, ensuring correct subject-verb agreement, and practicing the accurate use of verb tenses and passive forms when describing statistical data.
