Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response attempts to present an overview of the graph showing the number of tourists visiting a Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017, but the task is only partially addressed. While some main features are mentioned, such as the overall totals and the categories of visitors staying on cruise ships versus on the island, the data reported contains several inaccuracies and confusion. For instance, the student states that in 2026 there is a downfall (referring to 2016 based on the context), and some of the figures for cruise ship and island visitors are misread or unclearly described, such as claiming the number went back to the same number of people in 2010 in a year. Furthermore, the overview lacks clarity regarding the broader trends across the entire period. To reach a higher level, the response needs to accurately report the data without factual errors and provide a clearer, more coherent summary of the main trends and comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response shows some organization with paragraphs dividing the introduction, body details, and a concluding comparison, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. The logical flow is hindered by awkward transitions and confusing references. Cohesive devices are used in a somewhat mechanical or repetitive way, such as starting multiple sentences with temporal markers like 'In the above graph,' 'From 2010,' and 'In 2017.' Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks clear structural coherence, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison of tourist categories smoothly. To improve coherence, the writer should ensure that ideas are logically sequenced with a clear progression from start to finish, and use a wider variety of appropriate cohesive links without over-relying on basic time phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'quadruple' and 'downfall', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form, including 'Carribean', 'illusrates', 'vistors', and 'raised' instead of 'rose'. There are also awkward phrasings like 'Community who enjoys staying on island' and 'people also start enjoying to stay on cruise ship'. These errors and spelling mistakes occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary range, ensure correct word forms and spellings, and use more precise lexical items appropriate for reporting statistical data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few clumsy attempts at complex forms. There are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors that can cause difficulty for the reader, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The above statistics shows the the number of visitors came', 'The three different curving lines illusrates', 'the number of people on cruise ship are'), missing articles ('on cruise ship', 'on island'), and incorrect verb tenses or forms. Punctuation and preposition use within grammatical patterns are also inconsistent. To improve, the writer must practice forming accurate simple and complex sentences, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and article usage, and reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors.
