Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word requirement of 150 words, stopping abruptly at only 54 words (with 13 words copied directly from the prompt not counted). Because the text is severely incomplete, it only touches upon the very beginning of the chart, mentioning visitors in 2010 and 2011 with confused and inaccurate figures (such as stating the number in 2012 was 'at 0.5' and then decreasing). There is no overall overview and the vast majority of the data is omitted. To reach a higher level, the response must cover all parts of the task by reporting the main trends and making comparisons across the entire time period while meeting the required word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

The text displays an attempt to organise information sequentially using transition words like 'Firstly', but the overall progression breaks down almost immediately due to the extremely short length and abrupt stop. Paragraphing is not properly established as the response is just a single incomplete paragraph. Cohesive devices are minimal and mechanical. To improve, the writer needs to develop a clear structure with an introductory sentence, an overview paragraph, and well-organized body paragraphs that logically connect the data points using a wider range of appropriate cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in data reporting and word choice, such as 'tourists stayed' instead of 'tourists staying' and confusing numeric values. There are also inconsistencies in reporting the data accurately. However, the attempt to use reporting verbs like 'decreased' and 'rose' shows a basic foundation. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical range to include precise vocabulary for describing trends and fluctuations, and ensure that all terms and figures are used accurately in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The writing relies heavily on simple sentence patterns, and attempts at more complex structures result in frequent errors. For example, sentences such as 'the number of tourists stayed in 2010 and 2011 in cruise ships were 0.3 and 0.5' contain grammatical inaccuracies in subject-verb agreement, prepositions, and verb forms. Punctuation is also basic. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, improve subject-verb agreement, and incorporate accurate complex sentence forms without frequent errors that impede communication.
