Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates how many tourists are visiting a specific Caribbean island from 2010 to 2017.

Overall, the total number of visitors increased significantly through out the years. The number of visitors staying on island remains more than the people staying on ships for around 6 years. However, the number of tourists staying on cruise ships surpassed the amount of visitors staying on island.

The total number of visitors gradually increased from 1.5 millions to 3.5 millions between 2010 and 2016. However, there was a significant increase in total number of tourists from 2016 to 2017.The number increased from around 2.7 million to 3.5 million respectively. Number of people staying on ships fluctuated at the start from 2010 to 2017 but started rising from 2013 gradually and reached 2 million in 2017.

Furthermore, adults who visited islands also increased slightly but remains constant from almost three years at 1.5 million and then saw a dip in 2016. Eventually the number increased to 1.5 million again in 2017.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and attempts to provide an overview, but some features are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, the opening overview contains inaccuracies regarding the total visitor trend, stating it increased 'significantly through out the years' without capturing the specifics well, and mischaracterising the crossover timeline. Furthermore, data is sometimes imprecise, such as stating the total started at '1.5 millions' when the graph clearly shows it began at 1 million in 2010. While main trends are identified, key comparisons between cruise ship visitors and island stay visitors lack precision, leading to a partial and somewhat confused coverage of the data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes faulty, and cohesive devices are used in a mechanical or repetitive manner, such as the repeated use of 'However' to start sentences. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when shifting between the different visitor categories without sufficient signposting. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved to ensure smoother transitions between the data points presented.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic trends and numbers with words like 'increased', 'fluctuated', and 'surpassed'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is sometimes accompanied by inaccuracy or unnatural phrasing, such as referring to tourists staying on the island as 'adults who visited islands'. Spelling is generally good, but there are some minor word choice and collocation slips that do not seriously impede communication, allowing the reader to understand the general message despite the lexical limitations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a decent attempt at varied sentence structures. However, there are noticeable grammar errors, particularly with tense consistency and prepositions, such as 'through out' and 'remains constant from almost three years' instead of 'for almost three years'. Subject-verb agreement issues also appear, for example, saying 'remains' instead of 'remained' when discussing past trends. Punctuation has occasional minor flaws, but overall, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains mostly clear.
