Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by presenting an overview of the main trends shown in the graph, but it struggles with precision and selects some data points inaccurately. The writer attempts to cover the three categories (visitors staying on cruise ships, visitors staying on the island, and the total), mentioning that cruise ship visitors increased while island visitors fluctuated before decreasing towards the end. However, the details are sometimes vague or generalized rather than supported by specific figures from the chart. For instance, stating that visitor numbers crossed the figure of 3.5 million captures the final total accurately, but other descriptions of intermediate years lack precision. To move to a higher level, the response needs to select and report the key data more accurately and develop the comparisons more clearly throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a basic organizational structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary, providing some overall coherence. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by awkward grouping and mechanical use of cohesive devices, such as repetitive transitions like 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'Finally'. Paragraphing is attempted, but sentences within paragraphs often lack smooth logical links. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the exact sequence of data. To improve, the writer should ensure that ideas flow logically from sentence to sentence with a wider and more natural variety of cohesive links, and group the data logically by trends rather than mixing categories haphazardly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of lexical inaccuracies include 'picture' instead of 'graph', 'beggining' and 'siginificant' (spelling errors), 'crusie ship' (word form/spelling), and awkward phrases like 'tourist absorbs' or 'We absorbs record increase'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'major boost' and 'stable', but these are accompanied by errors. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary, use less common items more accurately, and pay close attention to spelling and standard collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response relies on a very limited range of sentence structures, with frequent errors in grammar that cause difficulty for the reader. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at more complex structures are consistently faulty. There are widespread errors in subject-verb agreement ('the visitors stay in cruise ships are low', 'the no of visitors stay on cruise ship are'), missing or incorrect articles ('on specific Caribbean island', 'graph become stable'), and incorrect prepositions and verb tenses ('visitors stay on island reamins', 'from onward 2010'). Punctuation is also weak, with missing spaces after commas and periods. To progress, the writer must improve basic grammatical accuracy, ensure correct verb forms and tense consistency, and demonstrate better control over sentence construction.
