Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by reporting information from the line graph regarding tourists visiting a Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017. However, the coverage of the task is only partial. While you present an overview of the general trend, the details provided lack clarity and accuracy in selecting key features. For instance, describing the population as 'some time increase and some time decrease' is overly vague, and the data points mentioned contain inaccuracies when compared against the actual chart, such as your description of the starting points and final values. To move to a higher band, you need to clearly select and report the main trends and key comparative data points without misinterpreting the visual information, ensuring all three data series—cruise ship visitors, island stay visitors, and total—are accurately and comprehensively described.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation in your response, as you attempt to divide information into an introduction, body details, and an overall summary. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the arrangement of ideas is difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are used inadequately or inaccurately, and referencing is often unclear, such as when you refer to 'square line' and 'arrow line' rather than using clear textual references or proper transitions. Paragraphing is also misused, breaking up related concepts awkwardly. To improve under this criterion, you need to structure your writing into logical paragraphs with clear topical focus, use cohesive devices more naturally to guide the reader through the data, and ensure referencing is precise so that comparisons between the different visitor categories are easy to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
Your vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task. You rely on basic terms and make noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word forms throughout the text. For example, 'prticular' is misspelled, 'discrive' is used instead of describe, and phrases like 'the value of tourists' are inappropriate for describing visitor numbers. You also struggle with precise vocabulary for describing statistical trends, using mechanical expressions like 'starting point' and 'end point' repeatedly. To achieve a higher band, you must expand your lexical range by incorporating more precise vocabulary related to graph trends, such as 'fluctuate', 'surge', or 'plateau', and ensure correct spelling and word formation to prevent communication strain.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The text displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic, repetitive patterns. When you attempt more complex constructions, they are frequently faulty. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the response, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('The given line graph show'), missing or incorrect articles ('in year 2010'), tense inconsistencies ('is start on', 'is increase'), and awkward prepositional phrases. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader. To improve, you need to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical forms, particularly verb tenses for describing past data, subject-verb concord, and accurate punctuation to make your sentences clearer and more grammatically sound.
