Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the main parts of the prompt by reporting figures for visitors staying on cruise ships, those staying on the island, and the total numbers between 2010 and 2017. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While some trends are noted, such as the overall upward trajectory of cruise ship tourists, certain details are under-developed or inaccurately described. For example, the total number is described as becoming constant at 2.8 in 2015 and 2016, whereas the graph indicates 2.75. Additionally, the overview is rather basic, consisting of separate sentences rather than a cohesive summary of the main global trends. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to provide a clearer, more integrated overview and ensure that all major features and comparisons are reported with greater accuracy.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically, using paragraph breaks to separate different categories of visitors. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'Moving further', and 'Furthermore', which guide the reader through the text, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is employed to organize the discussion by data series. However, referencing and logical progression are occasionally faulty, such as in the abrupt transition into the final paragraph. To achieve a higher score, the writer should ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs and maintain a more natural, interconnected flow of ideas throughout the report.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe general trends using terms like 'increased', 'declining', and 'rose'. However, the range is limited, and there are noticeable errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'depicts the information about' instead of 'illustrates the data regarding', and 'declinet' or 'fall' with incorrect prepositions like 'falls again at 0.3'. Less common lexical items are attempted but often lead to inaccuracy. To improve, the writer should expand their repertoire of vocabulary for describing data trends and focus on precision in word choice, collocations, and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response shows a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple and repetitive patterns. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, they are frequently affected by grammatical errors, such as article omissions ('Caribbean island'), tense inconsistencies, and preposition errors ('rose at 1.5' instead of 'rose to 1.5'). Errors occur with high frequency and can occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader in tracking the timeline and data points. To reach a higher band, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures and improve overall accuracy in verb forms, articles, and prepositions.
