Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given graph depicts the number of visiters who visited Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017. Overall the total number tourists increased every year. However, the trend of staying on island became lass popular than staying on curise ships.

The total number of tourists rose almost every year but the patteren is slighty different. In 2010 this figure was 1 million that grew up to 3.5 million in 2017.2 times we notice equal increase in tourist's figure, first time in 2011 and 2012 and 2nd time 2013. In contrast to this , during 2015 and 2016 this number beceme constant, 2.75 million. 2017 carried maximum number of tourists for 3.5 million.

However, the prefrence of people's stay either in curise nor on island changed with time. For instance in 2010 about double number of the people choose island to stay than on curise. This figure increased with time till 2015. Contrast to this the trend of choosing curise became popular. The number increased from .25 million in 2010 to about 2 million people by the end of 2017.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response attempts to cover all parts of the task by outlining overall trends and specific data points for visitors between 2010 and 2017. An overview is provided at the beginning, noting the general increase in tourist numbers and the shift in popularity between staying on the island versus cruise ships. However, some parts of the response are unclear or inaccurate regarding the data, such as the claim that tourist figures became constant at 2.75 million during 2015 and 2016 when the chart shows fluctuations, and the assertion that the preference for island stays 'increased with time till 2015' before changing. These inaccuracies and under-developed explanations mean the response only partially addresses the requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is a basic logical organization with the text divided into introductory and body paragraphs. However, overall progression is hindered by awkward sequencing and mechanical or inaccurate cohesive devices. Phrases like 'In contrast to this' and 'Contrast to this' are repetitive and used somewhat clumsily. Referencing between sentences is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the relationships between data points, such as the comparison of island versus cruise ship visitors in the final paragraph.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task, demonstrating frequent errors in spelling and word choice. Examples include spelling mistakes such as 'visiters', 'lass', 'curise' (repeatedly), 'patteren', 'slighty', 'beceme', and 'prefrence'. Word choice is sometimes unnatural, as seen in phrases like 'tourist's figure' and 'double number of the people'. These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer uses a limited range of sentence structures, with frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are issues with articles and prepositions in phrases such as 'Caribbean island' (missing an article) and 'choose island to stay than on curise'. Attempts at complex sentences often result in faulty grammar and punctuation, such as run-on constructions and awkward phrasing like '2 times we notice equal increase in tourist's figure'. Simple sentences are more successful, but grammatical errors persist throughout.
