Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response only partially addresses the task requirements. While the writer attempts to provide an overview and mention some figures from the line graph, the information reported contains noticeable inaccuracies and misinterpretations of the data provided in the visual reference. For instance, the data points for 2010 and subsequent years are misread, such as stating there were 200,000 cruise ship visitors when the graph indicates approximately 250,000, and later reporting inaccurate totals and comparisons. Furthermore, the overview is flawed and contradicts the visual data, incorrectly claiming that most visitors preferred cruise ships and the fewest stayed on the island in the last year. To reach a higher level, the writer must ensure that all key features and comparisons are accurately extracted from the chart and supported with reliable figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response displays some organization, making use of paragraphing to structure the introduction, overview, and body details, but it lacks clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes repetitive, mechanical, or awkwardly applied, such as transitional phrases like 'To commence with' and 'Moving further'. Referencing within and between sentences is occasionally unclear, which disrupts the flow of information. For example, pronouns and summary statements do not always smoothly connect the preceding data points to the following sentences. To improve, the writer needs to ensure that sentences progress logically from one point to the next, using a more varied and natural range of cohesive links to guide the reader through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some topic-specific vocabulary related to tourism and data reporting, but this is undermined by frequent spelling errors, such as 'visiters', 'paricular', and 'Caribben', alongside awkward word choices like 'humans' instead of 'people' or 'visitors'. There are also instances of inappropriate word forms and collocations, such as 'live on cruise ships'. While communication is generally maintained despite these errors, they cause some difficulty and prevent the response from achieving a higher level of lexical control. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding their accurate vocabulary for describing trends and graphs, and pay closer attention to standard English spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are numerous grammatical errors involving subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions within grammatical patterns, such as 'the most of the visitors preferred', 'the total numbers of tourists was 1 million who visiting an island', and 'there were half million of tourists different between stay on island'. These frequent errors often cause difficulty for the reader and reveal a weak control of basic sentence architecture. To progress, the writer must work on mastering fundamental grammatical rules, ensuring proper verb tenses, accurate prepositions, and correct subject-verb agreement across all sentences.
