Student answer (Band 4.5)

The graph illustrate the number of tourists visiting a particular Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017

Overall, we can se that in 2010 the tourist visiting the Caribbean island was less because at that time the people did not know about this island . As you can see the tourist visiting the Caribbean island was about 0.5% of the people

In 2014 the graph went up around 1 million of the tourist getting to know about that particular island. If we want to compare between 2015 and 2017 the graph was at it's peak in 2017 the tourist was staying there and enjoying because due to the establishment of the resorts and other things the people were staying in the resorts. About half of the tourist visiting the Caribbean island they were staying on the island and having fun with their families and kids

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the topic and mentions a rise over time, but it does not adequately summarise the graph’s main features. The claim that the 2010 figure was “about 0.5%” is inaccurate: the total was about 1 million, comprising roughly 0.25 million cruise-ship visitors and 0.75 million staying on the island. The discussion of 2014 as a rise of “around 1 million” is unclear, and the claim that about half of visitors stayed on the island is not supported for 2017, when cruise-ship visitors outnumbered island visitors. Explanations about people learning of the island and resorts are invented rather than shown by the graph. The response is also 19 words below the 150-word minimum. Include a clear overview and accurate comparisons of both categories and the total.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic sequence from an opening statement to comments about 2010, 2014 and 2015–2017, and paragraph breaks provide some separation. However, the response does not develop a clear progression through the data: the reader is not guided from an overview to a systematic comparison of the two visitor groups. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In 2014” and “If we want to compare” are present, but the last is followed by a long, loosely connected sentence that mixes the peak, accommodation and unsupported explanations. Referencing is also unclear in phrases such as “the tourist was staying there.” Organise the response into an introduction, a concise overview and a chronological comparison, using clear references to each visitor category.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some relevant topic vocabulary, including “tourists,” “graph,” “peak,” “resorts” and “compare,” so the general subject is understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or repetitive: “the tourist visiting” is repeated, while “the graph went up” does not specify which figures increased. “0.5% of the people” also confuses a percentage with a number of visitors, and “having fun with their families and kids” is informal and not useful for describing statistical data. Aim for precise terms such as “visitor numbers,” “rose,” “remained stable” and “accounted for,” and avoid adding details that the graph does not provide. This will make the description more accurate and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and longer sentence forms, and some basic meaning is conveyed. However, errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “The graph illustrate” should be “The graph illustrates,” and “the tourist visiting … was less” does not form a clear grammatical comparison. The sentence beginning “If we want to compare between 2015 and 2017” is awkwardly constructed, and “the tourist was staying there” shifts between singular and plural meaning. There is also a missing full stop after the opening sentence and inconsistent punctuation. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and build comparisons with clear subjects, for example, “The total number of visitors rose from … to ….”
