Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response identifies the broad period and attempts an overview, but the main features are not reported accurately enough. In particular, the overview says island visitors showed a downward trend, although this series generally rose from about 0.75 million to 1.5 million, with only a small dip near the end. Several figures are also seriously misreported: the total reaches about 3.5 million in 2017, not “305 milions,” and island visitors rise to around 1.5 million, not “105 millions.” The cruise-ship series also fluctuates early on rather than simply decreasing. These inaccuracies leave the key comparisons unclear and make the account only a partial response to the graph. Focus on the overall rise in total visitors and the contrasting patterns of the two visitor groups, using reliable figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs discussing the visitor categories. This gives the reader some sense of organisation, and transitions such as “Overall” and “However” signal changes in focus. However, progression within the body paragraphs is not always clear. The cruise-ship paragraph moves between 2012 and 2017, then introduces the total without a clear link, while the final paragraph’s time periods and comparisons are difficult to follow. Some linking is mechanical, and the repeated use of “the figure” and “this figure” makes references less precise. Group the information by clear trends, and use explicit comparisons and time markers so each paragraph develops one coherent point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

There is some task-related vocabulary, including “dramatic rise,” “downward trend,” and “witnessed,” which shows an attempt to describe changes rather than merely list figures. However, the range is limited and several inaccurate word choices or spelling errors make parts difficult to interpret. “The figure for cruise ships decreased slowly” does not describe the overall pattern, and “minimal alternation” is not a natural way to describe changes. Errors such as “coribbean,” “milions,” “eise,” “amiount,” and “Betwwen” are noticeable. Some expressions, including “visitors from total,” are also unclear. Build a reliable set of trend verbs and collocations, and check spelling and word forms carefully; for example, use “total number of visitors” and “fluctuated slightly.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning “whereas” and “which,” and most of the intended meaning can be followed. However, control is inconsistent, particularly in longer sentences. In “The figure for cruise ships decreased slowly from around 0.3 milions in 2012, while the period between 2012 and 2017 experienced…,” the relationship between the clauses is awkward and the sentence becomes difficult to process. The construction “The period between 2015 and 2017, went through…” also has an unnecessary comma and an unsuitable subject. Article, number, and sentence-boundary control need attention, as in “over a 7 years” and “unit are measured.” Practise shorter, accurate comparisons before adding complex clauses.
