Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph gives information about number of tourists visiting a specific Caribbean island in 2010 and 2017.

Overall, total number of tourists have gone up dramaticly over the given peroid. Vistors staying on island increased initailly but it was overtook by visitors arriving by cruise ship in the last two years.

The total number of tourists grown sharply from 1 million to around 2.5 million in 2014. During 2014 and 2015 the figure stabalized at more then 2.5 million before continuing to grow rapidly reaching its peak of around 3.5 million in 2017.

Visitors staying on island remained constant from 2010 to 2011 at over 0.5 million. The figure then rose considerably to around 1.5 million in 2013 where it remained mostly stable until 2017.

Visitors staying on curise ships fluctuated between 2010 and 2013 with figure being at 0.5 million. The figure went up sharply and overtook visitors staying on island in 2016 at 1.5 million becoming the majority number of tourists. Visitors staying on curise ships reached its peak of 2 million in 2017.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses the task with a clear overview: total visitor numbers rose substantially, while island-based visitors were eventually overtaken by cruise-ship visitors. It also selects relevant details, including the total reaching about 2.5 million in 2014 and 3.5 million in 2017, and the island figure remaining broadly stable after 2013. Most reported trends match the chart. There are, however, a few imprecisions: the total did not stabilize from 2014 to 2015, as it increased from about 2.5 to 2.75 million, and cruise-ship numbers fluctuated between about 0.25 and 0.5 million rather than simply being at 0.5 million. The overview and supporting comparisons are effective, but greater precision in these details would strengthen the report further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: an introduction and overview are followed by details about the total and then the two visitor groups. This makes the main trends easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “then,” and “before” help show progression. The response also uses separate paragraphs appropriately. To make the organisation more polished, connect the two visitor categories more directly when comparing their trajectories, rather than presenting them mostly in separate blocks. Some phrasing, such as “During 2014 and 2015,” is not fully clear about the change between those years, and repeated use of “The figure” makes cohesion somewhat mechanical. More precise referencing and varied transitions would improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses a relevant range of trend vocabulary, including “increased,” “rose considerably,” “remained mostly stable,” “overtook,” and “reaching its peak.” These choices communicate the main movements, but control is weakened by frequent spelling errors and some imprecise or unnatural expressions. Examples include “dramaticly,” “pero id,” “Vistors,” “initailly,” “stabalized,” and “curise.” “The majority number of tourists” is also an awkward collocation; “the larger visitor group” would be more natural. Aim to check spelling carefully and choose precise chart-reporting phrases. A broader, more accurate vocabulary would make the description clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview sentence with “but” and a time clause beginning “before continuing to grow.” However, errors in verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction are frequent enough to limit accuracy. For example, “total number of tourists have gone up” needs a singular subject and article, while “The total number of tourists grown sharply” is missing an auxiliary verb. In “it was overtook,” the passive construction is incorrect; use “it was overtaken.” The phrase “with figure being at 0.5 million” also needs an article and clearer grammatical framing. Review subject–verb agreement, past-tense forms, and articles, then proofread each sentence for a complete, correctly formed clause.
