Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the chart’s three categories and report the overall rise in total visitors, including the correct starting total of about 1 million and ending figure of 3.5 million. However, the overview is vague: “The most noticeable point” does not explain the main pattern or compare the categories. Several details are inaccurate or unclear. Cruise-ship visitors did not start at zero; they were about 0.25 million in 2010, and their growth was not a steady rapid rise, as the figure fell in 2012. Island visitors began at about 0.75 million, not 0.5, and fluctuated rather than simply “stopped” at particular points. Select key comparisons and describe the trends accurately to make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic sequence, moving from cruise-ship visitors to island visitors and then the total, and paragraph breaks help distinguish the introduction, overview and details. However, progression is difficult to follow because the overview does not state a clear main message, while the body relies on repetitive sequencing such as “and then” and “finally.” The contrast marker “On the other hand” does not introduce a clear contrast, since the total is a separate series. Some references, including “at that time” and “it,” are unclear. Organise the body around the two visitor types and their comparison, then report the total trend, using more precise links between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “increased,” “total number,” “cruise ships,” and “visitors,” so the topic is generally identifiable. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “stopped,” which does not accurately describe a value remaining stable or reaching an endpoint. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, such as “visitours,” “noticeble,” and “rapidtly,” and awkward combinations such as “types of visitours which is doing visiting.” These choices sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to interpret. Build a more precise set of trend terms—such as “rose,” “fluctuated,” and “remained stable”—and check spelling and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts longer sentences with sequencing and clauses, but control is weak and errors occur frequently enough to make some statements difficult to understand. For example, “between 2010 and 2017 how many tourists visiting” lacks a correctly formed clause, and “there are some types … which is doing visiting” has problems with agreement and sentence structure. Tense and verb forms are also inconsistent in “were zero and then it increased” and “it finally stopped.” Articles and prepositions are often missing or misplaced, as in “visiting Caribbean island” and “starts 1 millions in 2010.” Use straightforward, complete sentences with a consistent past tense, and check subject–verb agreement, articles and plural forms before attempting more complex structures.
