Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given line graph sketch out the number of tourists visting to a specfic island known as Caribbean, during the 2010 to 2017.

Overall, the graph summarises the three lines to categorize the visitors in millions. The first and second categorie shows two different type of visitors and on third categorie illustrates the total number of visitors between 2010 to 2017.

The graph demonstrates that the vistors staying on cruise ships is approximately half of 0.5 million. Then it shows fluctuation and became to 0.5 million in 2013. After this it shows increment and reached to 2 million in 2017.

Initally, the categorie of vistors staying on island was three-quaters of 1 million in 2010, and remains same in following year. Then this categorie increased and became 1.25 million in 2012, and 1.5 million in 2013. After this it remain unchanged untill 2015. In the following year, it fall to 1.25 million and then increased to 1.5 million in 2017.

The graph explains that in start the categorie of total visitors is 1 million and became closed to 2.75 million in 2015 and remain the same in next year. After this it sudden increased and became 3.5 million.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You cover all three series and report several key movements, including the cruise-ship figure reaching 2 million in 2017 and the island-stay figure remaining stable before dipping in 2016. However, the overview mainly describes what the three lines represent rather than summarising the main trends. It would be more effective to state that total visitor numbers rose substantially overall, driven especially by cruise-ship visitors, while island-stay numbers changed comparatively little. Some figures are also inaccurate: cruise-ship visitors were about 0.25 million in 2010, not “half of 0.5 million,” and the total was about 2.5 million in 2014 before reaching 2.75 million in 2015. More precise comparisons would make the report fuller and clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the visitor categories and total. This makes the information generally easy to follow, and time markers such as “After this” and “In the following year” help show sequence. However, the overview does not provide a useful summary of the main trends, and the repeated use of “The graph demonstrates/explains” and “categorie” makes the progression feel mechanical. Some links between details are also unclear, particularly “Then it shows fluctuation,” which does not specify the direction or timing of the changes. Grouping the figures into meaningful stages and using clearer comparisons between the series would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a graph, including “fluctuation,” “increased,” “remains same,” and “unchanged,” and the reader can generally identify the trends you intend to report. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “sketch out,” “visiting to,” “became to,” and “sudden increased.” Spelling errors, including “visting,” “specfic,” “categorie,” and “untill,” are noticeable and reduce the accuracy of the report. Aim for a smaller set of precise graph-description phrases, and check spelling and word forms carefully. For example, use “rose to” or “reached” for figures, and “remained stable” for an unchanged value.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence of changes is usually understandable. However, errors occur frequently in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “the visitors staying on cruise ships is” has a plural subject with a singular verb, while “it remain unchanged” and “it fall” need past-tense forms. In “and remains same in following year,” the tense and article use are also inaccurate. Some sentences are joined awkwardly, as in “After this it shows increment and reached to 2 million.” Practise forming accurate past-tense sentences and vary them with controlled clauses, such as “After fluctuating, the figure rose steadily and reached 2 million in 2017.”
