IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows the number of tourists visiting a particular Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph tracks the number of visitors at Caribbean island between the time frame of 7 years from 2010 to 2017.

Overall, it is clear that the number of tourists staying on the cruise ships is more than the visitors staying on the island. The cruise ship occupants however experienced a decline in initial years. The total visitors in general were the highest in number.

A closer exanmination of the graph reveals that the number of people staying on the island was first standard between 0.5 to 1 million and the number of individuals rose to 1.5 million between 2011 to 2013. nevertheless, in the starting year 2010 the cruise ship occupants increased and it experienced fluctuations in the mentioned time frame. Moreover, the visitors staying at cruise ships extented to 2 million exactly by the year 2017. however, the number of individuals staying at the island did not exceeded 1.5 million. In total the total number of tourists recorded by the year 2017 tends to be 3.5 million.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the overall rise in total visitors and report the final figures of 2 million cruise-ship visitors and 3.5 million overall, which are accurate. You also note that island-based visitors levelled off around 1.5 million. However, the overview contains a major reversal: cruise-ship visitors were not more numerous than island visitors for most of the period; they only overtook them in 2017. The claim that cruise visitors declined in the initial years is also misleading, as the series fluctuated before rising strongly. Some details are unclear, such as the island figure being “between 0.5 to 1 million” initially. To strengthen the response, compare the two groups accurately and describe the steady growth in the total alongside the contrasting trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and a paragraph of details. This gives the reader a coherent overall arrangement, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover” and “In total” help signal relationships. However, the progression within the detail paragraph is not always clear: it moves from island visitors to cruise visitors and back without a consistent comparison or chronological sequence. Some connectors are also mechanical or poorly matched to the point, and repeated uses of “however” interrupt the flow. Organise the body by series or by stages in time, and use comparisons to connect the figures—for example, explain when cruise visitors caught up with or surpassed island visitors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “fluctuations,” “occupants” and “recorded,” and the main meaning is generally understandable. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a graph. “First standard” does not clearly express that the island figure remained stable, while “extent ed” (intended as “extended”) is not the right verb for a figure reaching 2 million. “Occupants” is also less suitable than “visitors” in this context. There are spelling errors, including “exanmination” and “nevertheless” after a full stop, and some repetition of “number of individuals.” Choose precise trend language and check spelling and collocations so that the data description sounds natural and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “that” and “however,” and most of the intended meaning can be followed. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement and verb forms. For example, “at Caribbean island” needs an article, “did not exceeded” should use the base form after “did not,” and “the number … were” would require singular agreement if used. The opening phrase “between the time frame of 7 years” is also awkwardly constructed. Punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent, especially where “nevertheless” and “however” begin sentences. Review these patterns and aim for accurate sentence forms while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
