Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of tourists visiting a particular Caribbean island over a seven-years period between 2010 and 2017, categorized by their accomodation preferences. The figures are given in millions of visitors.

Overall, the total number of visitors experienced the significant upward trend throughout the whole period. Furthermore, while the number of tourists choosing staying on island was a popular option but eventually it was overtaken by those opting to staying on cruise ships over the years.

In 2010, there were total 1.0 millions of visitors witha clear mejority of 0.7 millions visiters staying on island. This figure remains the same over the next year and rose between 2011 and 2013 to 2 million, climbing to 2.75 million in 2015 and maintain their plateu throughout the year of 2016, before going sharply to its peak 3.5 million, from which1.5 millions tourists choosen to stay on island till end in 2017.

Conversely, the option of staying on cruise ships was lower to 0.2 million in the beginning of the graph that reached 0.5 in 2011 and eventually start overtaking the other option by rising over the years to 2 million in 2017.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall rise in total visitors and the changing balance between island stays and cruise-ship stays, which addresses the key features of the graph. The comparison that cruise-ship visitors eventually overtook island visitors is relevant, and you support the account with several figures. However, some data are inaccurate: island visitors were about 0.75 million in 2010, not 0.7 million, and the cruise-ship figure was about 0.25 million, rather than 0.2 million. The claim that cruise visitors overtook island visitors “by rising over the years” is also imprecise: this happened only in 2017. The account of the island-stay figures is less fully developed, particularly their fall in 2016 and recovery in 2017.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the total and the accommodation categories. This makes the main progression understandable, and linking expressions such as “Overall” and “Conversely” help signal shifts. However, the organisation within the detail paragraph is sometimes difficult to follow because several years and changes are compressed into one long sentence. The reference in “This figure remains the same” is not fully clear, and “maintain their plateu throughout the year of 2016” makes the subject of the sentence uncertain. The final paragraph also gives a broad trend without clearly comparing the two categories at key points. Use shorter, more clearly grouped comparisons and precise references to improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “categorized,” “upward trend,” “overtaken,” and “peak,” and the reader can generally understand the trends you describe. There are, however, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that reduce precision, such as “accomodation,” “mejority,” “visiters,” “plateu,” and “choosen.” Some collocations are also awkward: “the option … was lower” and “the number … choosing staying” do not express the comparisons naturally. Prefer accurate, conventional phrases such as “the figure for cruise-ship visitors was lower” and “tourists staying on the island.” More consistent use of precise terms for figures, categories, and changes would make the description clearer and more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a contrast introduced by “while” and a sentence describing several changes over time. The main meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “over a seven-years period” has an incorrect plural form, and “there were total 1.0 millions” has problems with article placement and number agreement. In “while … was a popular option but eventually it was overtaken,” the clause structure is not well controlled, while “from which 1.5 millions tourists … till end” contains errors in clause construction, plural agreement, and articles. Several sentences also run together without adequate punctuation. Build accuracy by checking sentence boundaries, singular/plural forms, and the structure of contrast clauses.
