IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows the number of tourists visiting a particular Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graphs illustrates the proportion of tourist visiting a particuler caribbean island from 2010 to 2017.
Overall, total number of visitors experienced upward trend throughout the period, while visitor staying on crusie ship and visitors staying on island both increasing, albeit in different rates.
in 2010, total visitors began at aapproximately 1 million. The figure followed an upward trend between 2010 and 2015 , before levelling off between 2015 and 2016 and subsequently reaching a peak in 2017.
From 2012 onwards, cruise ship tourism experienced rapid growth, eventually matching the number of island-stay visitors at 1.5 million in 2015, and finally finishing at 2 million in 2017. Consequently, by the end of the period, cruise ship passengers outnumbered those staying on the island

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall pattern accurately: total visitor numbers rise from about 1 million to a peak of 3.5 million, while cruise-ship visitors grow strongly and eventually exceed island-stay visitors. The comparison that the two categories are equal at 1.5 million in 2015 is also relevant. However, some features are covered more fully than others: the island-stay figure is not described across the period, and the total’s plateau at 2.75 million in 2015–16 could be stated more precisely. The response also falls 28 words short of the required minimum, which limits the detail available to summarise the data. Add a fuller account of the island-stay trend and key intermediate figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and then details about total visitors and cruise-ship passengers. The sequence from the starting point to the plateau and final peak is easy to follow, and phrases such as “before levelling off” and “Consequently” help connect information. This already gives the report a coherent progression. To make the organisation more complete and flexible, include a separate comparison of visitors staying on the island, rather than moving from the total trend directly to cruise ships. Some linking is also slightly mechanical, and the final sentence would be stronger if it were punctuated as a complete sentence. A fuller, balanced paragraph structure would improve the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use several suitable terms for describing data, including “upward trend,” “levelling off,” “rapid growth,” and “outnumbered,” which communicate the main movements and comparisons. There is also some useful variation in how you refer to the visitor groups. However, spelling and word-form errors are noticeable, including “particuler,” “caribbean,” “crusie,” and “tourist” where a plural is needed. Some phrasing is also imprecise: “proportion” suggests percentages, whereas the graph reports numbers of visitors, and “in different rates” is not a natural collocation. Aim for accurate, task-specific wording such as “number of tourists” and “at different rates,” and proofread spelling and capitalization.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the overview clause “while … both increasing” and the sequence “before levelling off … and subsequently reaching a peak.” These structures help convey changes over time, and the intended meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, however. The opening should use “graphs illustrate,” and “the total number” needs an article; the overview also needs a finite verb, for example, “both increased.” In “The figure followed an upward trend … before … reaching,” the subject and verb pattern is not fully controlled, and the final sentence lacks a full stop. Use complete clauses consistently, check subject–verb agreement and articles, and punctuate sentence endings carefully.
