Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the chart as covering 2010–2017 and report the overall rise in total visitors, including the final figure of about 3.5 million. However, the overview is inaccurate: cruise-ship visitors were not highest throughout; visitors staying on the island were more numerous until 2016, when the figures were about equal, and cruise visitors exceeded them in 2017. The account also stops mid-sentence at “it recor…”, leaving the cruise-ship trend and the island-stay figures largely unreported. The total is described as stable after 2015, but it was about 2.75 million in both 2015 and 2016, following a rise to that level. The response is also 18 words below the required minimum. Include a complete overview and compare both categories across the period.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence is followed by an overview and then a detail paragraph, with markers such as “First of all” and “Secondly”. The time sequence is partly clear, especially in the description of the total. However, the progression is interrupted because the final sentence ends at “it recor”, and the response does not develop a complete comparison of the two visitor categories. Some linking is mechanical or awkward, as in “on the other hand” and “Furthermore”, while the long overview sentence joins contrasting points without clear punctuation. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and key details, and connect comparisons directly and consistently.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “increased significantly”, “remained stable” and “rose sharply”, and you attempt to vary expressions for visitors and figures. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “total numbers of visitors”, “on a cruise ships” and “the visitors stayed on the cruises”. “Susequently” is misspelled, and “2.7 millions” and “500k tourist” show problems with number expressions and word forms. These issues sometimes make the intended meaning less clear. Aim for precise, conventional language for describing data, such as “the total number of visitors”, “cruise-ship passengers” and “approximately 2.75 million”.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast introduced by “on the other hand” and time clauses such as “after that”. However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur in basic sentence patterns as well as longer constructions. For example, “the visitors staying on an island are less as compared to cruise ships” has faulty comparison structure, while “the figures of visitors are remained stable” uses an incorrect verb form. The opening overview also runs two contrasting clauses together without adequate punctuation. Use accurate past-tense forms for the historical data, check subject–verb patterns, and divide long sentences so that each comparison is grammatically complete.
