Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the chart’s subject and report the broad rise in total visitors, including the final peak of 3.5 million. However, the overview is unclear: “total was highest” does not explain the main pattern or compare the two accommodation groups. Some figures and descriptions are inaccurate or vague. The total was about 2.75 million in both 2015 and 2016, rather than simply plateauing in 2015 before rising; island visitors increased from about 0.75 million in 2011 to 1.5 million in 2013, not “an increase of 8.” Cruise-ship visitors rose overall, especially after 2013, but this trend is not explained. The response is also 10 words below the required minimum. Include a clear overview and accurate, selected comparisons to address the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs discussing totals and accommodation types. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. Linking expressions such as “However,” “After that,” and “By contrast” also show an attempt to connect points. However, some links do not express the relationship clearly, and the overview does not prepare the reader for the details. The final paragraph combines island and cruise-ship figures without explaining their comparison, while phrases such as “the graph” are repeated and sometimes make the reference unclear. Organise the details into clearer comparisons—for example, describe the island trend first, then contrast it with the stronger cruise-ship growth—and use transitions only where their meaning fits.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “upward trend,” “plateaued,” “slight decrease,” and “peak point,” so the reader can recognise the intended subject and broad movements. However, the range is limited and several choices or forms are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to follow. “Visitors total” and “the graph was plateaued” are not natural ways to describe the data, while “hovered between 0.3 and 2” is too imprecise for the cruise-ship trend. Spelling errors such as “vist ing,” “flctuations,” and “initaing” also reduce clarity. Aim for precise chart language and check spelling: for example, say that the total “rose to” a figure and that a number “remained stable” over a period.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, including a contrast introduced by “By contrast” and a sequence marked by “After that.” However, control of sentence structure and verb forms is weak, and errors frequently obscure the intended meaning. Examples include “it follow the upward trend,” “the graph is slight increase,” and “graph were plateaued,” where the verb forms and sentence patterns are not correctly constructed. Missing or misplaced punctuation also causes run-on or fragmented phrasing, as in “In 2010.However” and “Afterwards, graph were plateaued.” Practise complete subject–verb sentences in the past tense, such as “The total rose from…” and “Island visitor numbers remained stable…” Then check articles, agreement, and punctuation.
