Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the chart’s subject and include some relevant figures, such as the total of about 1 million in 2010 and the rise in island-based visitors to around 1.2 million in 2012. However, the response addresses the task only partially: it stops during the 2012 discussion, so most of the 2010–2017 period is not reported. The overview is also inaccurate, claiming cruise-ship visitors exceeded island visitors overall, although island visitors were higher in most years and cruise visitors only overtook them in 2017. The claim that cruise visitors fell by 3% in 2012 is not supported; the figure fell from about 0.5 to 0.25 million. The response is 24 words below the required minimum. Cover the full period, give an accurate overview, and select key comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation: an opening paragraph gives an overview, followed by chronological details for 2010–2012. Time markers such as “In 2010,” “By 2011,” and “In 2012” help the reader follow the sequence. However, there is no clear overall progression through the graph because the response ends mid-sentence at “In contrast, the total numbers,” leaving the account incomplete. Connections between comparisons are also sometimes awkward, and the overview’s contrast between cruise and island visitors is unclear. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the main trends, then group related figures and comparisons logically. Ensure each sentence is complete and use linking expressions only where they clarify the relationship between data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “tourists,” “visitors,” “total,” and “increase,” and the reader can generally identify the categories being discussed. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which makes parts of the report difficult to interpret. For example, “the total calculation” is not a natural way to describe the combined number, and “numbers of visit on ship” is unclear. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “comparsion,” “visting,” and “islnad.” Aim for precise chart language such as “the total number of visitors,” “cruise-ship visitors,” and “visitors staying on the island.” Proofread spelling and avoid informal phrases such as “a little bit increase.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a comparison with “while” and a contrast introduced by “whereas.” Some sentence patterns communicate the basic information, but errors are frequent and occasionally make relationships unclear. For example, “the number of tourists are counted” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the total number were 1 millions” has problems with agreement and number. The sentence beginning “In contrast, the total numbers” is incomplete, and “the visitors staying on cruise has higher figure” lacks accurate agreement and article use. Practise forming complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check singular/plural agreement, articles, and verb forms. A wider range of accurate sentence patterns would make the comparisons easier to follow.
