Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the graph’s subject and give a broad overview that total tourism rose from 1 million to 3.5 million, while cruise-ship visitors increased markedly. However, the response only partially reports the main features: the island-stay figure is described as growing steadily, although it levels off and later dips, and the final comparison is left unfinished (“with a total ofn”). Some figures are also inaccurate: in 2010, island visitors were about 0.75 million, not 0.3 million; the 0.3-million figure is closer to cruise-ship visitors. The account ends before covering the 2017 figures clearly. The response is also two words below the required minimum. Include a complete overview and accurate start-to-end comparisons to develop the task more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic paragraph structure: an introduction and overview are followed by two paragraphs with figures, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “By 2013,” and “In contrast” show an attempt to connect information. However, progression is difficult to follow because the final paragraph is incomplete and the comparison after 2013 is not clearly organised. The overview also combines several ideas in a sentence whose meaning is unclear (“grew steadily in first and rised”). Some transitions, including “From 2013 onwards,” do not lead to a precise account of the period. Organise the report chronologically or by visitor category, and ensure each paragraph develops a complete comparison before moving on.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “total number,” “increased,” “dramatic increase,” and “in contrast,” so the reader can recognise the intended topic and trends. However, the range is limited and several spelling errors are noticeable, such as “illusrates,” “toursits,” “siginficantly,” and “fluctation.” Some word combinations are also inaccurate or unclear: “visitors on the ships,” “reached the time line,” and “dropped below at 1.5 million” do not express the data naturally. Use precise terms such as “cruise-ship visitors” and “visitors staying on the island,” and choose trend language carefully: the cruise-ship figure rose overall rather than fluctuating dramatically.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a few complex structures, including comparisons with “whereas” and “in contrast,” but the range is limited and errors are frequent enough to make parts difficult to understand. For example, “While, the number … grew steadily in first and rised” is not a complete, well-formed contrast, and “From 2013 onwards, there had been” uses an unsuitable tense for describing the graph. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, as in “the visitor were 1.5 million” and the unfinished final clause, “with a total ofn.” Practise accurate past-tense reporting and complete sentences, then check subject–verb agreement and punctuation before finishing.
