Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line chart illustrates how many visitors visited a Caribbean island from 2010 to 2017. All the figures are given in millions of visitors.

Overall, the number of tourists stayed on cruise ships surpassed the number of individuals who stayed on island. In addition, the total number of visitors rose without any fall.

The most noticeable feature is that the figure of individuals who preferred island remained stable at around 0.75 million for a year, while the number of opposite individuals increased at 0.5 million for a year. Moreover, the figure for people who stayed on isand grew steadily, and levelled of at 1.5 million in 2013, and the number remained unchanged untill 2015.

It is clear that the number of visitors who preferred cruise ships recovered at 0.5 million in 2013. the number of visitors stayed on ships overtook the number of individuals who lived on island in 2016 with 1.5 million figure. Moreover, the total of visitors rose gradually

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the chart’s subject and give an overview that the total number of visitors rose, which is an important feature. However, the overview contains a major misreading: cruise-ship visitors did not surpass island-staying visitors overall; they only caught up with them in 2016 and exceeded them in 2017. Some details are accurate, such as island-staying visitors reaching 1.5 million in 2013 and remaining at that level through 2015. Other descriptions are unclear or inaccurate, including saying cruise-ship numbers “increased at 0.5 million for a year” and “recovered” in 2013. The final account of the total trend is also left incomplete. Select the main comparisons and report them with clear, accurate figures across the period.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. This gives the reader some sense of organisation, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In addition” and “Moreover” help signal relationships. However, progression is uneven: the second paragraph moves between both visitor categories without clearly identifying the comparison, while the final paragraph repeats cruise-ship information and ends with an unfinished point about the total. Some references, such as “the opposite individuals” and “the number of visitors,” are difficult to follow. Organise the details by series or by time period, and use explicit labels such as “cruise-ship visitors” and “island-staying visitors” to make each comparison clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “surpassed,” “remained stable,” “grew steadily” and “levelled off.” However, the range is limited and several choices are unnatural or imprecise, which sometimes makes the data difficult to interpret. For example, “the number of opposite individuals” is not a clear way to refer to the other visitor group, and “recovered at 0.5 million” does not accurately express the change. There are also spelling errors in “isand,” “levelled of” and “untill.” Use standard terms such as “visitors staying on the island” and “cruise-ship visitors,” and choose verbs that describe the direction and size of change precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at longer structures, for example the sentence beginning “The most noticeable feature is that…” and the clause “while the number…”. However, errors are frequent enough to affect clarity. In “the number of visitors stayed on ships overtook,” the verb pattern is incorrect; write “the number of visitors staying on ships overtook…”. The sentence beginning “the number of visitors…” after a full stop also needs a capital letter, and the final sentence is incomplete. Articles and prepositions are sometimes missing or awkward, as in “stayed on island.” Practise accurate sentence boundaries and consistent grammatical patterns for describing figures, while keeping longer sentences controlled.
