Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response makes an attempt to describe the graph and includes a broad upward trend, but it reports the data inaccurately and does not clearly identify the main features. For example, the total rises from 1 million in 2010 to 3.5 million in 2017, yet the account gives confusing figures such as “1.5 millions” in 2012 and “2.5 millions” in 2014 without making clear which series they refer to. It also says both categories rose throughout, although island-based visitors levelled off and then dipped slightly. The overview is unclear and includes the unsupported claim that the lowest number of island visitors continued until 2017. Focus on the total trend, the contrasting patterns of the two groups, and accurate comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation: the response has an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs, and it uses linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In addition,” and “Following this.” However, the progression is difficult to follow because the paragraphs do not consistently separate the total from the two visitor categories. References such as “it” and “the public numbers” are unclear, so readers cannot reliably tell which figures are being discussed. Some connectors, including “therefore” and “furthermore,” do not establish a clear relationship between the information that follows. Group the total trend in one section and compare cruise-ship and island visitors in another, using explicit labels and a clear sequence of years.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response attempts a range of vocabulary, including “depicts,” “upward trend,” and “dramatically,” but control is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a graph. “Explorers” does not accurately describe tourists, while “large figures of tourists recorded at peak” and “a significant rose” make the meaning difficult to understand. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, such as “accomodating,” “drammatically,” and “milllions.” Use precise, familiar chart language rather than forcing less suitable expressions: for example, describe visitor numbers as rising, remaining stable, or reaching a peak. Check spelling and use “million” after a number.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and longer sentence forms, but complex constructions are often faulty and errors frequently make relationships between ideas unclear. Examples include “a period of 10 years” without a suitable preposition, “both staying on cruise ships and accomodating on island experienced,” and “until the 2017 the public numbers stood.” Subject–verb agreement and sentence structure also cause problems in “the number of citizens were” and “by the time it toouched.” Articles, punctuation, and clause connections are inconsistent, as in “Overall, it is evident that, the large figures…” Practise building accurate sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use past-tense forms consistently when reporting the historical data.
