Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the two visitor categories and report several relevant figures, including the island-stay total rising from 0.75 million to 1.5 million by 2013 and cruise-ship visitors reaching 2 million in 2017. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: it says island visitors are “going down,” although their overall trend is upward, with only a small dip in 2016. Some figures also differ from the graph: cruise visitors were about 1.5 million in 2016, not 1.6 million, and the 2017 figures are about 1.5 million on the island and 2 million on cruise ships. The response is 130 words, below the 150-word minimum. Add a clearer overview and cover the total trend as well as the categories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic, useful structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for visitors staying on the island and on cruise ships. “In contrast” helps signal the comparison between the two groups, and the figures are generally presented in chronological order. However, progression is weakened by the unclear overview, which combines several ideas in an awkward sentence, and by the absence of any discussion of the total number of tourists. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “the number” and “Finally.” Improve cohesion by grouping the main trends clearly, using precise references to each series, and linking the overview to the details that follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “fluctuations,” “steadily,” and “reaching,” which helps describe changes in the graph. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or awkward, such as “the figure rosed,” “the number incresed,” and “the tourists visiting a particular island visitors staying on cruise ships.” Spelling errors such as “intially” and “incresed,” along with missing spaces in “0.25 millionin” and “1.6million,” are noticeable. These issues sometimes make the description harder to follow. Aim for accurate, natural phrases such as “the number of visitors rose” and “visitors staying on the island,” and check spelling and spacing carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including a contrast sentence beginning “In contrast,” and a sequence describing changes over time. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. For example, “the number of visitors staying on the island is increased” uses an incorrect verb form, while “the number … is decreased” has the same problem. The overview sentence beginning “Overall, it can be seen” is also difficult to parse because its clauses are not joined clearly. Use past simple forms for the historical data (“increased,” “fell,” “rose”) and build sentences around a clear subject and verb. Check articles and sentence boundaries as well.
