Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of visitors visiting a particular caribbean island between 2010 and 2017. The proportion is calculated in millions.

Overall, total number of tourists visiting a caribbean island was higher during the whole period. Visitors staying on cruise ships gained the lowest visitors as compared to other two but reached its peak in the last year.

Visitors staying on cruise ships and on island both faced fluctuations during the whole period. Visitors staying on cruise ships was equal about 0.3 millions in 2010 and 2012, after 2010 percentage soar to 0.5 millions in 2011. In 2017 [the last year], reached at its highest point was 2 millions of visitors. Tourists staying on island was almost 0.50 millions in first quarter of the 2000s which further increased slightly. Between 2013 and 2015, proportion of visitors was equal same was 1.5 million.

The total visitors was greater between 2010 and 2017as 1 millions in 2010 which rose gradually till 2015 and faced a slight dip in 2016. At last year, the number of visitors was 3.5 millions which was the largest proportions over the whole period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the overall rise in total visitors and note that cruise-ship visitors reached their highest level in 2017. You also include several relevant figures, such as the total of 1 million in 2010 and 3.5 million in 2017. However, the overview is unclear: saying the total was “higher during the whole period” does not explain the main pattern, and cruise-ship visitors were not the lowest throughout, since they exceeded island-staying visitors in 2017. The island figure of “almost 0.50 millions” in the first quarter of the 2000s is inaccurate; the chart begins in 2010, at about 0.75 million. The account also omits key comparisons, including the island series’ broadly stable level after 2012 and the total’s plateau in 2015–16 before its final rise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the two visitor groups and then the total. This gives the reader some organisation, and time markers such as “Between 2013 and 2015” help locate information. However, progression is not consistently clear: the overview’s claim that cruise-ship visitors were the lowest conflicts with the later 2017 figure, and the final paragraph repeats the general rise without clearly comparing it with the component series. Linking phrases such as “which further increased slightly” and “At last year” are either vague or awkward, while “after 2010” does not clearly connect the figures. Grouping the data into a clear overview followed by well-ordered comparisons would make the account easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “visitors,” “proportion,” “fluctuations,” “increased,” and “peak,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing data. “Gained the lowest visitors” does not express that a series had the fewest visitors, and “percentage soar to 0.5 millions” confuses a percentage with a number of people. “The largest proportions” is also unsuitable because the graph reports visitor totals, not proportions. Repetition of “visitors” and “number” further limits flexibility. Aim for precise reporting language such as “the figure,” “accounted for,” “rose,” and “remained stable,” and check collocations and singular/plural forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a time clause beginning “Between 2013 and 2015,” and the main meaning can usually be understood. However, the range is limited, and errors recur in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and number forms. For example, “Visitors staying on cruise ships was” should use a plural verb, while “the total visitors was greater” has an incorrect subject–verb pattern. The sentence “In 2017 … reached at its highest point was 2 millions” is structurally incomplete and difficult to parse. Articles and prepositions are also unreliable, as in “reached at its highest point.” Use complete subject–verb sentences, check agreement, and practise combining comparisons with accurate clauses.
