IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows the number of tourists visiting a particular Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

From the given line graph, we can clearly demonstrate the difference over the years that was recorded regarding the tourist visiting interests. We can see three catergories represented by three dfferent indicators including a triangle, square and the total is represented by a circle.

We can appreciate a gradual increase in number of tourist each year. In 2010 only around a million tourists visited the Caribbean island which has been exponentialy increased to now 3.5million in year 2017.

There is also a difference between people's personal preference, whether they like to stay on cruise ships or island itself during their visit and a larger amount of people preferred staying on cruise ships rather than island, since they can enjoy the luxury as well as the trip. Number of people preferring cruise is as big as 2 million for the year 2017.

While crusie ships were a famous thing, many people still liked to experience the place traditionaly and get to experience their culture, food and environment to the fullest, hence there is still a large number of folks who like to stay at the island during their trip.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the overall rise in total visitors, from about 1 million in 2010 to 3.5 million in 2017, and correctly note that cruise-ship visitors reached 2 million by the end. However, the account covers the series unevenly: it gives almost no figures for visitors staying on the island, whose numbers rose from about 0.75 million to 1.5 million, with a small dip in 2016. The claim that more people preferred cruise ships than the island is inaccurate for most years; cruise visitors only exceeded island-stayers in 2017. Explanations about luxury, culture and food are not shown by the graph. A clearer overview and more balanced reporting of the main trends would make the summary more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a broadly understandable sequence: it introduces the graph, describes the total, and then discusses the two types of accommodation. Paragraph breaks also help separate these points. However, the opening focuses on symbols rather than the main information, and the final paragraph repeats the comparison without adding clear data. Linking phrases such as “While” and “hence” are used, but the relationship between ideas is sometimes unclear, particularly when the text moves from the graph to unsupported explanations of tourists’ preferences. Organise the response around an overview followed by the two visitor categories, and use comparisons to connect the figures. This would make progression more purposeful and cohesion less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary, including “gradual increase,” “represented,” and “preferred staying,” and the general meaning is usually clear. There is also an attempt to use more descriptive language, such as “exponentially,” although this is not an accurate description of the steady overall rise. Several spelling errors—“catergories,” “dfferent,” “exponentialy,” and “crusie”—and imprecise phrases such as “tourist visiting interests” reduce accuracy. “A larger amount of people” is also an awkward collocation, and “famous thing” is too informal for an academic report. Use precise chart language such as “the number of visitors,” “rose steadily,” and “visitor totals” to improve clarity and style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which has been … increased” and a contrast introduced by “While.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “which has been … increased” uses an incorrect passive construction; write “which increased” or “which had risen.” In “a larger amount of people preferred,” the determiner does not agree naturally with the plural noun, and “in year 2017” needs an article or a different preposition pattern, such as “in 2017.” The long sentence beginning “There is also a difference” would be clearer if divided. Continue practising verb forms, articles and sentence boundaries while retaining varied structures.
