Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph illustrates the Number of tourists visiting a Caribbean island Visitors staying on cruise ships, Visitors staying on island and total number os visitors between 2010 and 2017.
Overall, Visitors showed a steady upward trend thorougout the period. In 2010, it started at about 1 million and increased significantly to around 3,5 million by 2017.
The number of visitors staying on the island had a more stable pattern. It began at around 0.75 million in 2010. slowly increased from 2011 to 1.5 million 2013, and remained approximately 1.5 million from 2013 to 2015. It slightly dropped to around 1.2 million in 2016 before rebounded 1,5 million in 2017.
The numbers of visitors staying on the cruise ships had a more erratic growth. Starrting at low at about 0.25 million in 2010. it first rose to 0.5 million in 2010, and dropped back to 2010 level. then grew steadily reaching about 2 million in 2017.
Compartively, the growth rate staying on cruise ship visitors was much more reliable compared to the isalnd. but both contribute to overall increase in the total number of visitors to the island.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall rise, from about 1 million visitors in 2010 to 3.5 million in 2017, and distinguish the relatively stable island-stay figures from the stronger growth in cruise-ship visitors. Several key details are also reported accurately, including the island figure remaining near 1.5 million for much of the middle period and reaching about 2 million for cruise visitors in 2017. However, some figures and comparisons are unclear or inaccurate: cruise visitors rose to 0.5 million in 2011, not 2010, and the island figure increased to 1.25 million in 2012 rather than rising from 2011 to 1.5 million in 2013 as phrased. The overview is relevant, but a clearer account of the changing contributions to the total would make the report more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, separate paragraphs for the two visitor categories, and a final comparison. This makes the main information reasonably easy to locate, and phrases such as “Overall” and “before” help signal relationships. However, progression is weakened by abrupt, fragment-like statements in the detail paragraphs, such as “slowly increased…” and “Starting at low…”, and by the confusing sequence “it first rose to 0.5 million in 2010, and dropped back to 2010 level.” The final comparison also repeats the general idea that both categories contributed to growth without adding a precise comparison. Use complete sentences and connect each year-to-year change in a clear chronological sequence to make cohesion less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-appropriate vocabulary, including “steady upward trend,” “stable pattern,” “remained,” and “dropped,” which helps describe the graph. There is also an attempt to vary wording rather than repeat “increased” throughout. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural and sometimes obscure the intended meaning: “erratic growth” does not describe the broadly rising cruise-ship trend well, while “more reliable” is not an appropriate comparison of growth rates. Spelling errors such as “thorougout,” “Starrting,” “Compartively,” and “isalnd,” along with “os” for “of,” are noticeable. Aim for precise trend language and check spelling carefully; terms such as “fluctuated,” “rose steadily,” and “more pronounced growth” would better fit the data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including a contrast between the two visitor groups and a time clause with “before.” Some sentences communicate the trend clearly, for example, “It slightly dropped to around 1.2 million in 2016.” However, sentence boundaries and verb patterns are often faulty: “slowly increased…” begins as a fragment, as does “Starting at low…”, and “before rebounded” needs a grammatical form such as “before rebounding.” The sequence “it first rose … in 2010, and dropped back to 2010 level” also lacks clear tense and reference. Capitalisation after full stops and comma use are inconsistent. Build complete sentences around each trend and check that verbs agree with the time sequence.
