Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main overall pattern accurately: total visitor numbers rise from about 1 million to 3.5 million, while cruise-ship visitors grow enough to exceed island-staying visitors by 2017. The response also reports the island-staying figure at the end and describes its slight decline before recovery. These points address the task and are supported with relevant figures. However, some details are imprecise: cruise-ship visitors began at about 0.25 million, not “in between 0.5 and 1 million,” and the total did not increase continuously because it levelled off at about 2.75 million in 2015–16. More precise reporting of these stages would strengthen an otherwise clear summary of the key features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the total and the two visitor groups. This makes the main comparisons easy to locate, and linking expressions such as “Although,” “before,” and “by the end” help show relationships over time. The progression is not fully smooth, however. Several sentences are overloaded with multiple trends, particularly the overview and the cruise-ship paragraph, and the repeated opening pattern “The number of…” makes the account feel somewhat mechanical. Some references, such as “it” in the overview, are not immediately clear. To move further, use shorter, more controlled sentences and vary how you connect the data while keeping each paragraph focused.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “progressive rise,” “fluctuation,” “gradual incline,” “overtakes,” and “stabilizing,” which allows you to describe changes and comparisons. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural in context: “steady progress” is better expressed as “a steady increase,” and “shows a some fluctuation” combines forms incorrectly. There is also repetition of “number of visitors” and “shows,” limiting flexibility. Spelling and word-form slips such as “tgat” and “217” reduce polish. Aim for precise collocations and a wider set of natural trend verbs, for example “rose,” “remained stable,” and “declined,” rather than relying on “shows” throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt complex sentences, including the contrast beginning “Although…” and clauses describing changes “before” and “after” particular years. However, these structures are often not controlled accurately, and sentence boundaries are difficult to follow. For example, “Overall, the total number of visitors show” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “which are initially lower … shows” shifts between plural and singular forms. The sentence about the total also lacks a clear grammatical structure: “initially begin with number of visitors 1 million … shows a continuous increase.” Articles and prepositions are frequently missing or awkward, as in “for 2010 to 2017.” Practise building shorter sentences with consistent subjects and verb forms, then combine them selectively.
