IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows the number of tourists visiting a particular Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph demonstrates how many individuals visited a particular Caribbean island from 2010 to 2017.

Overall, it is evident that all of three sector, visitors who stayed on cruise ships, on island and the toltal number witnessed an upward trend. The total visitors depicted a significant growth, while visitors staying on cruise ships surpassed the number of guests who stayed on island.

To begin with, in 2010 the number of visitors who opted to staying on cruise ships stood at approximately 0.25 million visitors. Although during the following year this number doubled and accounted for 0.5 million visitors, it decreased and became 0.25 miilion in 2012. Between 2012 and 2017 this figure showed a considerable increase and rose by around 1.5 million visitors and registered 2 million in 2017. In contrast, visitors who stayed on island, was at 1.5 million in 2010. Until 2011 it remained constant; however it constituted 1.5 million visitors in 2013. From 2013 to 2015 the number stayed unchanged. This figure declined slightly for 2016, by approximately 0.5 million, but in 2017 it recovered and accounted for 1.5 million visitors.

With regard to total number, this figure figured 1 million visitors in 2010. By 2015 it showed a sustainable growth and registered about 2.75 million people. During the next year it stayed almost unchanged, while it increased dramaticly for 2017, by 2 million visitors .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall rise in total visitors and describe the contrasting patterns: cruise-ship numbers grow strongly, while island stays are comparatively stable. Several figures support this, including 0.25 million cruise visitors in 2010 and 2 million in 2017, and the total reaching about 2.75 million in 2015–16. However, some key data are misreported: island visitors were 0.75 million, not 1.5 million, in 2010, and the 2016 decline was about 0.25 million, not 0.5 million. The overview also says all three series rose, although island visitors ended at the same level as in 2013 and fluctuated. Check the graph carefully and make the overview more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, a clear overview and body paragraphs that group the two visitor categories before discussing the total. This gives the reader a logical route through the information. Sequencing phrases such as “Although during the following year,” “In contrast,” and “With regard to total number” help signal changes and comparisons, and the chronology is generally easy to follow. To make the progression more polished, avoid relying on repeated “this figure” references when several series are being discussed, and ensure each comparison is explicitly tied to the correct category. The final paragraph could also compare the total’s growth with the other series rather than listing its changes separately.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of trend vocabulary, including “doubled,” “remained constant,” “declined slightly,” “recovered,” and “significant growth.” These choices communicate the main movements, and the meaning is generally clear. Some less natural or inaccurate expressions limit precision: “all of three sector” and “the toltal number” are faulty, while “sustainable growth” does not fit a short-term increase and “figured 1 million” is not idiomatic for a data value. There are also spelling slips such as “miilion” and “dramaticly.” Aim for standard chart-reporting collocations and proofread spelling so that the vocabulary sounds controlled as well as varied.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “Although,” “while,” and “however.” Most of the trends remain understandable, and you attempt to vary sentence openings. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, agreement and sentence construction: “all of three sector” needs a plural noun and article adjustment, and “visitors who stayed on island, was” has incorrect agreement and punctuation. The phrase “visitors who opted to staying” also uses the wrong verb pattern. Review subject–verb agreement, articles before singular countable nouns, and verb patterns after “opted.” More consistently accurate sentence structures would make the report clearer and more fluent.
