Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the overall rise in total visitors and describe the broad patterns for both accommodation groups, so the response is relevant to the graph. However, the overview is unclear and includes a key misinterpretation: visitors staying on the island did not remain the lowest category throughout; they were more numerous than cruise-ship visitors until 2016. Several figures are also inaccurate: cruise-ship visitors began at about 0.25 million, not 5 million, and the total was about 2.75 million in 2016, not 2.8 as a major category. The account of island stays also gives an incorrect early increase. Select the main trends accurately and compare the categories at key points to make the summary more complete and clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about totals, cruise-ship visitors, and island stays. This gives the reader some sense of organisation. However, progression is weakened by unclear or repetitive linking, especially the repeated use of “While” and “In contrast,” which do not always express the relationship between the figures accurately. The overview combines two trends in a confusing sentence, and the final paragraph repeats that island stays were the lowest category. Some sentences also run together, such as the overview and the sentence beginning “Around 0.8 million.” Use separate, clearly focused paragraphs and connect comparisons explicitly—for example, explain that island stays were higher until cruise-ship numbers overtook them in 2017.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “increased,” “decline,” “remained constant,” and “reaching,” to describe changes over time. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “visitors leaving in cruise ship” does not clearly describe tourists staying on cruise ships, and “major category” is not an appropriate description of the total. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “significanlty,” “vistors,” “graduallay,” and “journy.” Aim for precise chart language and check spelling carefully. Useful alternatives include “cruise-ship visitors,” “the total,” and “rose steadily.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentences and use time clauses to describe changes, but control is inconsistent. Errors occur in basic sentence patterns as well as in more complex attempts: “total number of tourist … has increased” has problems with articles, number, and agreement, while “the figure increased … and reached to” uses an incorrect verb pattern. The sentence beginning “While number of visitors…” is incomplete, and punctuation is missing after “time” and before “Around 0.8 million.” These issues make parts of the account difficult to read. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, plural forms, and complete clauses. Shorter sentences with one clear comparison will help you maintain accuracy while you develop more varied structures.
