IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows the number of tourists visiting a particular Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given chart illustrates that millions of visitors visit the Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017.

Overall, the total number of tourists surged along with the rise in the number of people staying on cruise ships while number of travellers staying on islands increased initially but after that it became constant.

To begin with, the total number of international travellers had inclined from 1 million to 3.5 million in a time period of seven years. In contrast to that the visitors staying on island remain constant for first year which is around 0.75 million after which from 2011 it start to increase and reached to a steady growth which is 1.5 million and it remains still till 2015 after that there is a slight deep for year 2016 and in 2017 it reaches back to 1.5 million.

Similarly, the amount of people staying on cruise ship had a slight increase for one year and then there is a slight deep but from 2013 it has a steady growth and number reaches from 0.5 million to 1.5 million.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall pattern: total visitor numbers rose substantially, cruise-ship visitors increased, and island-staying visitors changed less. The figures you give for the total and island visitors are broadly consistent with the chart, including the dip in 2016 and recovery in 2017. However, the cruise-ship account is incomplete and ends at 1.5 million, whereas the chart shows this figure reaching 2 million in 2017. The overview also says island visitors became constant, which overlooks their later dip and recovery. To strengthen the response, report the final cruise-ship figure and compare the two visitor groups at the end, when cruise-ship visitors outnumbered those staying on the island.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by details about total visitors, island visitors and cruise-ship visitors. This makes the main information easy to locate. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “To begin with” and “Similarly” help signal the stages of the report. However, some connections are mechanical, particularly “In contrast to that,” and the long sentence describing island visitors contains several changes over time without clear punctuation or separation. The final paragraph also gives a trend but does not connect it to the total or the island-staying group. Use shorter, clearly punctuated sentences and organise the details around the most useful comparisons to make progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “surged,” “steady growth,” “slight” and “constant,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There is some variety in how you refer to visitors, although “travellers,” “tourists” and “people” are not always the most precise choices for this chart. Several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “had inclined,” “slight deep” and “the amount of people.” “Deep” does not describe a downward movement here, and “amount” is not suitable for countable people. Aim for standard chart language and accurate collocations, for example “increased,” “a slight dip” and “the number of visitors.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses linked with “while,” “after which” and “after that.” The overall meaning can usually be followed, but some errors in tense, agreement, articles and sentence construction reduce accuracy. For example, “visitors staying on island remain constant” needs a past-tense verb and an article, while “from 2011 it start to increase” has an incorrect verb form. The long sentence beginning “In contrast to that” also joins several stages without effective punctuation. Practise keeping the report consistently in the past tense and checking subject–verb agreement, articles and sentence boundaries. These changes would make your varied sentence forms more controlled.
