Student answer (Band 5.0)
The graph illustrates the number of travelers visiting a particular Carribbean island during 2010 and 2017.
The islands have seen a significant growth in visiters. In 2010 around 1 million individuals used to stop by on islands and 2017 it is around 3.5 millions.
During 2010, more people used to stay on islands as compared to cruise ships, from
1 million visiters around 0.8 million people stay on islands and 0.3 million on cruise ships.
The number of visiters keeps growing year by year. In 2011 around 1.3 millions people visit different caribbean islands, 0.8 million stay on islands and 0.5 on cruise ships.
In 2012, cruise ship numbers decline to 0.3 million and island numbers raise to 1.3 millions from total visiters of around 1.5 millions.
The number of travellers keeps groving, between 2016 and 2017 cruise ships accounts for around 1.5 million and 2 million people; whereas, island stoppers were 1.3 million and 1.5 million.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the overall rise in total visitors, from about 1 million in 2010 to 3.5 million in 2017, and include some relevant figures for the two accommodation types. However, the report covers the data only partially: it gives detail mainly for 2010–2012 and 2016–2017, leaving the important middle years largely unreported. The statement that visitor numbers “keeps growing year by year” is not fully accurate, since the total is unchanged between 2015 and 2016, and island stays also fall slightly in 2016. The overview is limited and does not clearly highlight the contrasting pattern of steady growth in cruise-ship visitors versus the relatively stable island figure. Select the main trends and compare them accurately across the whole period.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response is divided into paragraphs and generally follows the years in chronological order, so the reader can identify the topic of each section. However, progression is uneven: the opening gives a broad trend, then the report moves through 2010–2012 before jumping to 2016–2017, with no clear grouping of the intervening years. Several sentences repeat the idea that visitor numbers grow, rather than developing a connected comparison. Linking phrases such as “During 2010” and “In 2012” help signal time, but connections between total visitors and the two categories are not always clear. Organise the report around an overview and two coherent data groups, and use comparisons to link figures rather than presenting them as separate year-by-year statements.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary, including “significant growth,” “decline,” and “accounts for,” and the reader can usually understand the intended meaning. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or informal for a graph report. “Stop by” and “island stoppers” are not suitable descriptions of tourists, while “used to stay” suggests a past habit rather than reporting chart data. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “Carribbean,” “visiters,” and “groving,” which reduce the accuracy of the writing. Use consistent terms such as “visitors,” “tourists staying on the island,” and “cruise-ship visitors,” and choose precise reporting verbs such as “rose,” “remained stable,” and “accounted for.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response includes both simple statements and some attempts to combine information, for example, “The number of travellers keeps groving, between 2016 and 2017…” However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward or unclear. Examples include “In 2010 around 1 million individuals used to stop by on islands and 2017 it is around 3.5 millions,” where the time reference and verb forms are not controlled, and “from 1 million visiters around 0.8 million people stay on islands,” which has an incomplete, confusing structure. Singular/plural agreement and articles also need attention, as in “3.5 millions.” Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build clear comparison sentences with complete clauses and appropriate punctuation.
