IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows the number of tourists visiting a particular Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates a Caribbean island was visited by the number of tourists who stayed on cruise ships and on island between 2010 and 2017. The unit is measured in millions. It is evident that the number of visitors who stayed on cruise ships was considerably increased throughout the given period, whereas visitors who preferred staying on island were flutuating.

In 2010, the least number of visitors stayed on cruise ships was about 0.2 million as compared with the island, than the trend fluctuated for next 2 years. Later, the number of visitors staying on cruise ships followed upward trends and reached at 2 million from 2012 to 2017. However, the number of visitors who stayed on island were almost 0.8million in the year 2010 which gradually increased and reached to 1.5million by the year 2013. Than maintained steadiness for next 2 years For last 2 year, the trend fluctuated and reached to again 1.5million at the highest number for staying on island.

It is obvious the total number of visitors followed the upward trends throughoout the given period and reached peak at 3.5million by the year 2017.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall patterns: total visitor numbers rise, cruise-ship visitors increase substantially, and island stays change less. The final sentence correctly notes the total reaching about 3.5 million in 2017, and you include relevant figures for both visitor groups. Some details, however, are unclear or inaccurate. Cruise-ship numbers did not rise continuously from 2010: they fluctuated in the early years before increasing, and the figure of 2 million applies to 2017, not the whole 2012–2017 period. The island figure also fell in 2016 before returning to 1.5 million. Your overview is relevant, but the total trend and the contrast between the two categories could be developed more clearly and precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about each category and then the total. This gives the reader a coherent overall arrangement. You also use linking expressions such as “whereas,” “However,” and “Later” to signal comparisons and sequence. At times, though, the progression is less clear: the cruise-ship account combines early fluctuations with a broad later-period claim, while the island account shifts between years without consistently identifying the changes. “Than maintained steadiness” also has an unclear reference. Grouping the overview with the main comparisons, then describing the two categories in a more orderly sequence, would make the cohesion less mechanical and the relationships between details clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “fluctuated,” “upward trends,” “steadiness,” and “peak,” and the reader can generally understand the comparisons you intend. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “was considerably increased,” “reached at,” and “the least number.” Spelling errors, including “flutuating” and “throughoout,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural chart-description phrases and check spelling carefully; for example, use “increased considerably,” “reached,” and “the fewest visitors.” More precise wording would help distinguish a rise, a fluctuation, and a stable period.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause with “whereas” and a sentence beginning “However.” The main trends remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “The line graph illustrates a Caribbean island was visited by the number of tourists” has an awkward clause structure, and “the number of visitors … were” shows a subject–verb agreement problem. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent in phrases such as “on island” and “reached to 1.5million.” Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention, particularly around “Than maintained steadiness” and the missing full stop before “For last 2 year.” More reliable control of these patterns, alongside varied sentence structures, would improve accuracy.
