Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given line graph tracks the information about the number of tourists visiting a particular Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017.

Overall, the total number of visitors increased gradually. The number of visitors staying on island and on cruise ships suffered some fluctions.

Giving a keen glance to the linear presentation it is clear that, the number of visitors staying on the cruise ships suffered fluctations between 2010 to 2013 and after that it started increasing gradually and reached its peak of 2 millions by the year 2017 . The number of visitors staying on island remained constant till 2011 ( 0.75 million) and increased to 1.5 million by the year 2013. The figure remained stable and had a small dip in 2016 but after that , the number regained its value of 1.5 millions.

However, talking about the total number of tourists visiting a Caribbean island , the numbers initially started from 1 million and started increasing gradually and reached its highest point at 3.5 million by the year 2017.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover the main features and provide a clear overview: total visitor numbers rose overall, while the two accommodation categories fluctuated. The account is generally accurate, including the island-stayer figure reaching 1.5 million in 2013, remaining stable, dipping in 2016, and recovering in 2017. You also correctly report the cruise-ship figure reaching 2 million and the total reaching 3.5 million in 2017. To make the report more fully developed, include key comparisons, such as the island-stayer group being larger than cruise-ship visitors until 2016, when cruise visitors overtook it. The overview could also identify the total’s faster rise in the later years rather than describing its increase only as gradual.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph reporting details. The sequence from cruise-ship visitors to island visitors and then the total is understandable, and time markers such as “by the year 2017” help orient the reader. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or awkward. “Giving a keen glance” and “However, talking about” do not create clear logical links, and “However” suggests a contrast that is not really developed. The long detail paragraph also combines several series without clear grouping. Use more direct transitions and organise the body around meaningful comparisons—for example, describe the two visitor categories together before summarising how they contribute to the total.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “remained constant,” “increased,” “stable,” “dip,” and “reached its peak.” These choices make the main movements understandable. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions that limit precision, such as “tracks the information,” “suffered some fluctuations,” and “Giving a keen glance to the linear presentation.” “Fluctuations” is also misspelled twice as “fluctions” and “fluctations,” while “millions” is not the natural form after a specific figure such as 2. Aim for concise, conventional graph language and check spelling and collocations. More precise verbs such as “rose,” “fell,” and “overtook” would also help express comparisons efficiently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, and the reader can generally follow the trends. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. For example, “between 2010 to 2013” uses an incorrect preposition pattern; write “between 2010 and 2013” or “from 2010 to 2013.” In “the number of visitors staying on island,” an article is needed before “island.” There are also awkward sentence boundaries and punctuation, including the comma after “clear that” and the extra spaces before punctuation. The sentence beginning “However, talking about the total number…” is structurally cumbersome. Practise accurate comparisons and article use, and divide long sentences into clearer units while retaining some complex structures.
