Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the chart’s subject and include some relevant figures, such as the total rising from 1 million in 2010 to 3.5 million in 2017. However, the response only minimally fulfils the task: the overview is unclear and does not summarise the main trends, while most years and comparisons are omitted. Some figures are also misreported: in 2017, island-staying visitors were about 1.5 million, not 0.7 million; the 2 million figure refers to cruise-ship visitors, not the total. The opening overview is largely incomplete, and the final comment about the “average rate” is not supported by the graph. The response is 147 words, below the 150-word minimum; the 13 words copied from the prompt are excluded from that count. Give a clear overview and accurately compare the series across the period.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response, with an opening, a general statement, and later details. Connectors such as “Overall,” “Initially,” and “Moreover” show an effort to guide the reader. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the overview repeats incomplete ideas rather than summarising the trends, and the details jump from 2010–11 directly to 2017. Several sentences are fragments or lack a clear relationship to the preceding point, for example, “A number of tourists staying on a cruise ships and island.” Repeated use of “on the other hand” does not establish a meaningful contrast. Group the data into a clear overview and logically ordered comparisons, using linking phrases only where they clarify relationships.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “tourists,” “cruise ship,” “island,” and “total,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, vocabulary is basic and repetitive, with “a number of people staying” repeated several times and little precise language for describing change. Some word combinations are unnatural, such as “average rate is slow” and “a number of tourist 3.5 million people.” These choices make parts of the report unclear, especially when distinguishing the total from the two visitor categories. Build a more varied set of accurate chart-description phrases, such as “the figure for,” “rose to,” “remained stable,” and “accounted for,” and use the category labels consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, and the use of time markers such as “Initially” and “in 2017” helps establish a time frame. However, grammatical control is weak and errors frequently make the intended meaning difficult to follow. For example, “0.3 million people staying on a cruise ship and rise slightly 0.5 million” lacks a clear subject and correctly formed verb, while “the visitors staying on a two different places” has problems with articles and number agreement. Several clauses are incomplete, including “A number of tourists staying on a cruise ships and island.” Work on complete subject–verb sentences, past-tense forms for the historical data, and accurate singular/plural agreement. Use full stops to separate complete ideas.
