Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the topic and reports a few figures, including a total of about 1 million in 2010 and a rise in the island-staying group by 2012. However, it does not provide a clear overview of the main trends across 2010–2017, and it stops before describing most of the period. Some figures are also inaccurate: in 2010, cruise-ship visitors were about 0.25 million and island visitors about 0.75 million, rather than 0.8 and 0.4 million. The claim that 2012 had the lowest cruise-ship figure is not supported, since the 2010 and 2012 values are both about 0.25 million. The response is also 29 words below the required minimum. To improve, include a concise overview and accurately compare the overall rise in total visitors with the contrasting trends in the two groups.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is an attempt to organise the response chronologically, beginning with 2010 and then moving to 2011 and 2012. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the response ends mid-thought (“addinhally the the”) and does not develop the later years or reach a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “moreover,” and “additionally” are repeated mechanically, often without clarifying how the next point relates to the previous one. The opening also confuses the axes, which makes the information harder to interpret. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and the key details, then group comparisons by trend rather than adding a connector to every sentence. Clearer sequencing and complete sentences would make the report more coherent.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “visitors,” “total,” “increase,” and “population,” and attempts to describe change with phrases such as “slight increase” and “went upwards.” However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unsuitable for this graph: “population” refers to people living in a place, not tourist numbers, and “visits of tourists” is less natural than “number of tourists.” Spelling errors are frequent, including “garph,” “Futheremore,” “disscused,” and “constent,” which distract from the report. Aim for precise chart language such as “visitor numbers,” “rose,” “remained stable,” and “reached a peak,” and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts simple statements and some longer sentences, but grammatical control is inconsistent. For example, “Visitors staying on Cruise ships was 0.8 million” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “the following will be disscused in the paragraph” is an awkward passive construction. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also unreliable: several statements run together, as in “the total was around 1 million In 2010,” and the final line is incomplete. Capitalisation is inconsistent, and the opening sentence lacks appropriate spacing and punctuation. Practise writing complete, clearly punctuated sentences with consistent past-tense reporting, for example, “The total rose to 1.25 million in 2011.” Greater control of these basic patterns would make the information easier to understand.
