Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the chart’s subject and mention both visitor categories, with some broadly accurate figures: cruise-ship visitors rise to 2 million in 2017, while island-staying visitors reach about 1.5 million. However, the overview is unclear and inaccurate: the total was not simply “highest visiting,” and island visitors were not consistently the lowest; they exceeded cruise-ship visitors for much of the period. The response also omits the total series, a key feature, and gives an incorrect island figure for 2015 (about 1.5 million, not a new rise to that point). The report is only 114 words, below the 150-word minimum, which limits its coverage. Add a clear overview and compare all three series using the main turning points and end values.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response with an introduction, an overview and a detail paragraph, and sequencing phrases such as “To begin with” and “Following that” help signal order. However, progression is difficult to follow because the overview is unclear and the detail paragraph moves between the two categories without a clear comparison. Some linking is mechanical or inaccurate, as in “after that major rise” and “and again figure fall.” The sentence beginning “Following that” is also detached from the preceding sentence. Group the information more logically—for example, describe the overall total first, then compare the two visitor types—and use clear links to show changes over time.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “visitors,” “cruise ships,” “rose” and “fall,” so the topic remains recognisable. However, vocabulary is repetitive and several word choices or collocations are unnatural, such as “the figure of visitors visiting,” “major rose” and “number fall.” There are also spelling errors, including “beging” and “Morever,” which reduce accuracy. Use a wider range of standard chart language and choose verbs that fit the data, such as “increased,” “declined,” “remained stable” and “reached.” Avoid repeating “visitors” where a clear reference such as “this figure” would work.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, and the basic meaning can usually be recovered. However, the range is limited, and longer structures are often faulty. For example, “the number of tourists visiting a Caribbean island total was highest visiting” has an unclear construction, while “visitors staying on island was start” contains problems with articles, agreement and verb form. The sentence fragment “Following that major rise to 2 millions…” also lacks a complete clause. Punctuation is inconsistent, including the full stop before “while” and the missing space after “2017.” Practise forming complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check past-tense forms and singular/plural agreement.
