Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the overall rise in total visitors, from about 1 million in 2010 to 3.5 million in 2017, and mention the slight decline in island-staying visitors between 2015 and 2016. These are relevant features. However, the report is very brief and only partially covers the graph: it gives little account of the year-by-year pattern, omits the total’s plateau in 2015–16, and does not clearly compare the two visitor groups. The statement that cruise-ship visitors increased by about 2 million is ambiguous; the figure reaches about 2 million in 2017, while the increase over the period is about 1.75 million. The required minimum of 150 words is not met, leaving the key features underdeveloped. Add a clear overview and support it with accurate comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response contains a basic sequence: an opening sentence, an overall statement, and comments about the two visitor categories. This gives the reader some sense of the topic and the main direction of change. However, the ideas are not arranged into clear paragraphs, and the progression is difficult to follow because several statements repeat the same total increase. The opening “overall” is not separated or punctuated as a new sentence, while “While in 2010 to 2017” introduces an incomplete and confusing connection. Use a short introduction, a distinct overview, and one or two paragraphs grouping the data by trend. Linking phrases should show comparisons or time changes rather than simply joining loosely related statements.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant basic terms such as “line graph,” “visitors,” “increased,” and “downfall,” so the subject is generally understandable. However, the vocabulary range is limited and some word combinations are inaccurate or awkward, including “visitors visited,” “height rise,” and “visitors had staying on cruise ship.” These choices make parts of the report harder to interpret and reduce precision. Use standard trend language and accurate category labels, such as “the total number of tourists,” “rose steadily,” and “visitors staying on cruise ships.” Avoid repeating “visitors” and “increased” by varying expressions carefully, for example with “tourist numbers” and “climbed.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts several sentence forms, including a general overview and time-based statements, and the main message can usually be understood. However, the range is narrow, and errors in verb forms, sentence boundaries, and clause construction occur repeatedly. For example, “the number of visitors visited” uses an incorrect verb pattern, while “visitors had staying” has an inaccurate verb form. The opening sentence also lacks a full stop before “overall,” and the final sentence beginning “While” is not a complete, well-formed clause. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use simple past forms consistently when describing the finished period: “the number rose” or “visitors stayed.”
