Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the period and report several relevant figures, including the overall rise to 3.5 million in 2017 and the increase in cruise-ship visitors. However, the response mainly follows the years one by one and does not give a clear overview of the main trends or the changing relationship between the two visitor groups. Some figures are inaccurate: island visitors in 2012 were about 1.25 million, not 1.75 million, and the cruise-ship figure in 2014 was about 1 million, rather than an increase of 1 million that year. The 2013 total is also not clearly reported. To strengthen the response, summarise the overall growth and note that island stays were generally higher until cruise visitors rose sharply and exceeded them in 2017.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic chronological order, so readers can follow the movement from 2010 towards 2017. However, it is presented as one long paragraph, and the repeated transitions such as “as we jump to next year” and “as we move toward next year” make the progression mechanical. Several sentences combine multiple years, figures and comparisons, which makes relationships difficult to track; for example, the discussion of 2014 and 2015 runs into the total for 2013–2015 without clear separation. Use an introduction and overview, followed by two organised detail paragraphs, and group related trends rather than narrating every year. Clearer sentence boundaries and more precise references would make the information easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing the graph, including “increased,” “stays same,” “drop,” and “total number of visitors.” This gives you a basic means of reporting change, but the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or awkward, such as “the cruise ship visitors get back to 2010 visitors” and “the total tourist rates.” Repetition of “visitors” and “increased” also limits flexibility. There are noticeable spelling errors, including “crruise,” “islad,” “icreased,” and “dramtical,” which can distract the reader. Practise accurate trend language and collocations, such as “rose steadily,” “remained stable,” “fell slightly,” and “the total number of tourists.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt longer sentences using time clauses and comparisons, but control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make the relationships between figures harder to understand. Examples include “the number of tourist … stays,” where the subject and verb do not agree, and “visitors staying on island stays same,” which has problems with articles, agreement and sentence structure. Tense and verb forms also vary, as in “the cruise ship continues to increase” when describing the completed period. Punctuation is weak: several sentences run together, and spacing after full stops is missing. Build accuracy with clear past-tense sentences, checking subject–verb agreement and articles, then combine ideas only when the links are clear.
