IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the future, digital media is likely to dominate global media leading many to believe that nobody will buy printed newspapers or books as they will be able to read everything online for free. While I agree that this might be the case in the future, I do believe that some book enthusiasts will continue buying hard copies of books in the future.

Since the covid 19 pandemic, many newspaper companies have deviated towards publishing on online websites alongside printing newspaper. This new form of media has allowed people to access newspapers online with no cost rather than paying for a monthly subscription. Additionally, nowadays you can find many websites online that allow you to download the soft copy of books without paying. Due to these innovations, many people have stopped purchasing books and newspapers and fully shifted to reading online. For example, new university students are often advised to download the pdfs of their books online for free rather than spending money to buy new books.

However, there are still some people who enjoy the feeling of having a book in their hand when they read. Many inidividuals have their own personal preferences when it comes to reading so they might prefer to spend money and buy books instead. Similarly, the elderly may prefer to purchase newspapers as accessing and using new technology may be difficult for them. For instance, it may be hard for our grandparents to type on a small screen and search for websites.

Keeping all these in mind, I agree that in the future people will lean towards reading books and newspapers online but I do believe a specific group of people will continue buying books and newspapers so physical form of media will not go completely extinct.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you accept that online reading will become more common, while arguing that some people will continue to buy printed material. You address both the shift to free digital access and reasons print may remain, supporting these points with examples about university students and older readers. This meets the task well. To develop the response further, examine the claim that people will be able to read “everything” online without paying: your discussion gives examples of free access but does not consider whether this will apply to all books and newspapers or remain sustainable. The point about personal preference is relevant, but could be explained in more depth to make the argument more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from your position to the advantages of online reading, then reasons print may persist, and finally a balanced conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “However,” and “For instance” help readers follow the progression, and the examples are placed appropriately. The overall organisation is logical and easy to understand. To make cohesion more flexible, avoid relying mainly on familiar transitions and strengthen links between related ideas within paragraphs. For example, the move from free online newspapers to downloadable books could be connected more explicitly as evidence of a broader change in reading habits. The conclusion also repeats much of the introduction; a concise synthesis of the two main reasons would create a more purposeful ending.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “digital media,” “monthly subscription,” “personal preferences,” and “physical form of media.” These choices communicate the argument clearly, and phrases such as “lean towards” show some flexibility. However, several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, including repeated uses of “online,” “books,” and “people,” while “deviated towards publishing on online websites” is an awkward collocation. There are also spelling errors such as “inidividuals,” and “soft copy” is less natural in this context than “digital copy.” To move beyond adequate range, choose more precise alternatives and use less common topic vocabulary accurately and naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a range of sentence forms, including complex clauses with “while,” “as,” and “when,” and many sentences are controlled and easy to follow. For example, “While I agree that this might be the case in the future, I do believe…” expresses a contrast effectively. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain. In “Since the covid 19 pandemic,” the opening phrase is not smoothly connected to the main clause, and “publishing on online websites alongside printing newspaper” has problems with article and plural forms. The final sentence also needs clearer punctuation or restructuring around “so.” Review articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use complex structures; these refinements would make your generally clear grammar more consistently accurate.
