IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that in the next years nobody will purchase the paper version of books and newspapers due its free availability online. I disagree with this view because the digital versions are not always free and readers are still prefer to read while the book is between their hands.

First of all, it is true that writers and authors provide a numerical product of their books so their readers can download it online or read directly from their websites. But, to have the access to those books or articles the readers should pay first with credit or visa cards. For instance, Amazon is a renowned platform that provides this service of buying the electronic version of books. Additionally, the most popular newspapers such as Economist are applying a monthly or a weekly fees to get a complete access to their articls and blogs.

Secondly, a huge number of people are still adore reading the printed novels and magazines. This is because the smell of the paper and sound of turning pages give a special sharm for the act of reading. As a result, many readers spend a considerable part of their salaries purchasing the printed version of their favourite books instead of reading the cracked pdf versions on Internet.

In conclusion, I disagree that people will no longer buy newspapers or books and they can read everything online without paying because the majority versions of books even the electronical ones are not for free and the readers are still prefer the printed books and magazine.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you disagree because online material is not always free and some readers prefer printed books. Both reasons are relevant, and the Amazon and newspaper examples help support the point about paid access. The response therefore addresses the main parts of the question. However, the preference for print is explained mainly through the sensory experience of paper; this could be developed further by explaining why that preference is likely to continue despite online access. The claim that “the majority versions of books” are not free is also broad and unclear. To strengthen the response, qualify generalisations and extend each reason with a more precise explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. “First of all,” “Additionally,” and “Secondly” make the progression easy to follow, and the examples are placed in relevant paragraphs. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, the linking is somewhat formulaic, and the conclusion largely repeats the introduction rather than drawing the two arguments together. Some connections within sentences are also awkward, such as “As a result” introducing the consequence of readers’ preference without fully explaining the link. Use more precise transitions and clearer references between claims.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “electronic version,” “monthly fees,” “printed novels,” and “considerable part of their salaries.” These choices allow you to express both sides of your argument, and some phrases show an attempt to use less common language. However, noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors limit precision: “numerical product,” “special sharm,” “articls,” and “electronical ones” are inaccurate or misspelled. “Cracked pdf versions” is also an unsuitable expression for this context. Build a more reliable range of topic vocabulary and check spelling and natural word partnerships; this will make your meaning clearer and your argument sound more academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a reason clause (“This is because…”) and a result clause (“As a result…”). Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “readers are still prefer” should be “readers still prefer,” while “a huge number of people are still adore” needs “a huge number of people still adore.” In “due its free availability,” the grammatical pattern requires “due to its.” The conclusion repeats the verb-form problem. Review auxiliary verbs and subject–verb patterns, and proofread articles and prepositions. More accurate control of these structures would improve clarity while preserving your sentence variety.
