IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 4.0)

It is irrefutable that the technology is now going to be at an advanced stage. Some people believe that in the near future everyone will read online newspapers and that the news online is free of cost, so nobody will buy the printed newspaper. I also agree with the statement that the news is free online, which people will read.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the topic and gives a position: “I also agree with the statement.” However, it does not explain the extent of agreement or develop reasons with examples, so the task is addressed only minimally. The claim that online news is free is repeated, but the prompt also asks about printed books and newspapers; books are not discussed, and the future prediction is not examined. The response ends with “There are so many reasons for” and provides no supporting points. It is also substantially below the required 250 words, leaving the argument incomplete. To improve, state a precise position and develop several relevant reasons, including whether free online access will replace both printed books and newspapers.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.0

There is a basic attempt to introduce the topic and state an opinion, and the opening moves from a general comment about technology to the issue of online newspapers. However, the response has no developed paragraph structure or logical progression beyond these opening statements. The unfinished final line, “There are so many reasons for,” leaves the reader without the promised explanation, and there are no linking expressions to connect supporting ideas. Because the response is so brief, relationships between claims are largely absent. Organise the essay into an introduction, body paragraphs with one main reason each, and a conclusion; use clear links such as “firstly,” “in addition,” and “however” to show how the points relate.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the general topic, with relevant terms such as “technology,” “online newspapers,” and “printed newspaper.” The phrase “irrefutable” also shows an attempt to use a more formal word. However, the range is narrow and ideas rely on repetition of “online,” “news,” and “read,” rather than precise vocabulary for discussing access, cost, or the future of print. Some phrasing is unnatural, particularly “the news online is free of cost” and “the news is free online, which people will read.” Use more natural collocations and a wider range of topic-specific terms, such as “digital publications,” “subscription fees,” “print media,” and “access content at no charge,” while ensuring each phrase fits its context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response uses some complete simple sentences, including “Some people believe that in the near future everyone will read online newspapers,” and the meaning is generally understandable. It also attempts a subordinate clause with “which people will read,” although the clause does not connect clearly to its intended meaning. Grammatical control is uneven: “the technology” uses an unnecessary definite article in this general statement, and “I also agree with the statement that the news is free online, which people will read” has an unclear clause structure. The final sentence is incomplete. To improve, practise accurate article use and build complete sentences with clear clause relationships; then add a controlled mix of simple and complex structures.
