IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

People will not spend money on printed newspapers or books in future because everything will be available online whatever people want to read, without even purchasing. From my perspective, it is true becasue of it's convenience and accessibility.

The primary reason for that is the convenience. Everyone has smartphones nowadays, they do not have to wait for a newspaper to be delivered at their doorstep to read everyday news. They can just search about any regional issue happening at present, and they can find news on different channels. Moreover, individuals can find books online of every genre. They don't have to go to a bookshop to buy a specific book. Books are easily accessible online and you can read them anywhere, even while travelling.

The other benefit could be financial as many teenagers don't want to spend their pocket-money on comic books. While many books are available on free websites, they can save that money and use for other purposes. Furthermore, the medical books or books for other competitive exams are much expensive, low-budgeted families may not be able to support their children. In that case, accessibility to online material can help students alot to prepare for a particular exam. As a result, they can prepare well and don't have to spend money on buying printed books.

For instance, I had almost no time to prepare for a competitive exam. Instead of going to a bookshop and searching for the book, I opt for online material that was freely available and was really helpful. I didn't have to spend money on it. In conclusion, I believe that most people rely on online medium for daily news. They don't buy books because of several reasons. Although most people prefer online books and newspapers, some still read daily printed newspaper.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you agree that online access will reduce purchases of printed material, and you give relevant reasons involving convenience and cost. The examples about checking regional news, accessing books while travelling, and using free exam resources support this view. However, the response does not fully address the absolute claim that nobody will buy printed newspapers or books. Your conclusion briefly acknowledges that some people still read printed newspapers, but this qualification is not explored or reconciled with your opening agreement. Some points, such as the cost of exam books, are explained more fully than the possibility that print will continue to appeal to certain readers. Develop that contrast and state more precisely how far you agree.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, two reason-based paragraphs, a personal example, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “As a result” help show how ideas relate. However, the personal example is separated into a short paragraph even though it directly supports the point about free study materials; placing it in that paragraph would make the progression smoother. Some connections are also mechanical, and the conclusion introduces the idea that some people still read print without explaining how this qualifies the main position. Clearer links between the reasons, example, and final qualification would make the argument easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “convenience,” “accessibility,” “regional issue,” and “competitive exam.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and phrases such as “free websites” and “printed books” are relevant. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which limits precision: “search about any regional issue” and “online medium” are not natural expressions in this context, while “books” and “money” recur frequently. There are also spelling errors such as “becasue” and “alot.” Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and check spelling; for example, distinguish between online news sources, digital publications, and printed editions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, using structures such as “While many books are available on free websites…” and “Although most people prefer online books and newspapers…”. Most of the meaning remains clear, but some errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and verb forms reduce accuracy. For example, “Everyone has smartphones nowadays, they do not have to wait” joins two independent clauses with only a comma, and “I opt for online material” shifts into the present tense while describing a past experience. “The medical books … are much expensive” also has an incorrect comparative construction. Review sentence boundaries and maintain consistent tense, while continuing to practise complex clauses.
