IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the upcoming days, online newspapers and books will replace the printed ones; everyone will be able to access, search and read them online free of charge instead of going to buy printed ones. In my opinion, I do agree that there are several advantages to reading online; however, reading through printed books has its own uniqueness.

On the one hand, many people currently prefer to save their efforts instead of going by themselves to buy a new book or newspaper to read; they would rather search online and get a soft copy of that book for free and begin to read it whenever they are free. Moreover, it is much faster. When they want to read the latest version of a book, they will only search through the internet and get it within seconds. To illustrate, one of the main merits of reading online is that they can highlight any quote in various colors so easily and translate any part using a specific preferred dictionary. For instance, they can also read on the phone during transportation while travelling instead of carrying a bag containing the book.

On the other hand, many individuals enjoy reading a printed copy in their hands, because it will make them feel the sense of the writer while imagining the main idea utilizing a pen and paper. In addition, they believe reading offline will help them to separate their reading time from work or any distracting notifications which can affect their pleasure while reading.

In conclusion, although the excessive revolution of technology facilitates reading online for many readers, printed copies will keep their pleasure for several people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree that online reading has advantages, while arguing that printed books will retain appeal. You address both sides and give relevant support, including quick access, highlighting and translation tools, reading while travelling, and fewer digital distractions. This is a solid response to the question. However, the discussion of the future claim is not fully developed: much of the first body paragraph describes current convenience rather than explaining why free online access will cause printed purchases to disappear. The point that printed books help readers “feel the sense of the writer” is also unclear and needs explanation. Develop these ideas and make your degree of agreement more explicit in the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, contrasting body paragraphs signposted by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. The examples generally follow the points they support, so the reader can follow the main line of argument. This already shows effective organisation, but progression within the first body paragraph is less controlled: the discussion moves from saving effort to speed, then to highlighting and translation, and finally to phone use, without clearly grouping these benefits. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Moreover,” “To illustrate,” and “For instance.” Group related examples and use more varied, precise links; clarify references such as “they” so it is always clear whether this means readers or books.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “soft copy,” “latest version,” “distracting notifications,” and “printed copies.” These choices help communicate the contrast between digital and paper reading. However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “upcoming days” is not a natural way to refer to the future, “save their efforts” does not fit the intended meaning, and “excessive revolution of technology” is an awkward phrase. “Feel the sense of the writer” is also unclear. Aim for natural collocations and check whether each phrase expresses your intended idea precisely. More accurate wording would make your argument sound clearer and more fluent without requiring more complicated vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a concession in the introduction (“although…”) and clauses beginning with “while” and “because.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, and the errors do not generally prevent understanding. Some grammatical choices are less controlled, however. In “many people currently prefer to save their efforts instead of going by themselves,” the structure is awkward and the comparison is not expressed cleanly; “they can highlight… so easily and translate” also shifts from a general claim into an unclear subject reference. The sentence beginning “In addition, they believe…” is long and would benefit from clearer clause structure. Review sentence construction and pronoun reference, and punctuate longer sentences carefully while retaining your attempts at complex forms.
