IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is a fact that these days everyone is fascinated by the online platforms. In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. I strongly diagree with this statement because printed books offers more benifits.

To begin with, printing books and newspapers plays a crucial role in many aspects of life. Firstly, it promotes the habit of reading and children learn the focusing by reading books and nespapers. When they read everything online, they inhabit the reading and focusing skills. Students learn more from books because there is no distraction of notifications and they should be able to focus more on reading. It also causes both physical and mental health problems such as increase in screen time causes weak eye-sight, headache, anxiety and depression,

Moreover, there are trust issues online. For example, there are many fake news circulating and many people believe it but the newspaper are printed by trust and investigation, so there are more convinient. Reading a physical book is a completely different experience from staring at a screen. It allows readers to focus without notifications, and many people remember information. Furthermore, for older people, reading a newspaper in the morning with tea is a cultural habit and a moment of relaxation that a phone cannot replace. Therefore, the physical experience of print remains irreplaceable.

In conclusion, printed books and newspapers are more useful and easy for trust, focusing and experiencing. So, they are irreplaceable

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you strongly disagree that print will disappear, and you give relevant reasons involving children’s concentration, screen-related health concerns, trust in news, and the experience of reading print. However, the response addresses the task only partially because it does not examine the claim that online reading will be free, or explain whether free access would change people’s choices. Several points are asserted rather than developed—for example, the claim that print is more trustworthy needs a clearer explanation or example. The response is also 228 words, below the required 250; the 23 words copied from the task prompt are not counted. Develop the main arguments and address the free-online-access aspect directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs introduced by “To begin with” and “Moreover,” and a conclusion. The ideas generally progress from reading and health benefits to trust and the physical experience of print. Some connections, however, are unclear or mechanical. In the first body paragraph, “When they read everything online, they inhabit the reading and focusing skills” does not clearly express the intended contrast, interrupting the argument. The second paragraph also moves quickly from fake news to the sensory experience of books and then older people’s habits. Group related points and use clearer links between claims and explanations. A more developed final paragraph would also help the conclusion follow naturally from the discussion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “notifications,” “distraction,” “trust issues,” “cultural habit,” and “physical experience.” These choices help communicate your main ideas, but the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision. For instance, “inhabit the reading and focusing skills” does not convey the intended meaning, while “printed by trust and investigation” is an unnatural way to describe reliable reporting. There are also misspellings such as “diagree,” “benifits,” “nespapers,” and “convinient.” Build a more accurate range of phrases for discussing reading habits, credibility, and access to information, and proofread spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a sentence beginning “because” and the example introduced by “such as.” Most of the main ideas remain understandable, but errors in agreement, sentence construction, and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “printed books offers” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “the newspaper are printed” has a plural agreement problem. The sentence about screen time and health ends with a comma rather than a full stop, leaving the punctuation incomplete. Some constructions, such as “they should be able to focus more on reading,” also make the relationship between the ideas less clear. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and separating complete sentences with appropriate punctuation.
