IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In the contemporary world, with everything being digitalized, newspapers and books have become widely available through online. Some individual might argue that, since they are now available online there is no need to buy physically printed copies. I firmly believe that it has numerous benefits to read online, most of the online books and newspapers are easily accessible and most of them are freely available.
Firstly, the main benefit would be the accessibilty, we can access any news or books from anywhere in the world. For instance, a student has to get a book on A.I of a particular auther for his class, but the finding that specific physically can be time consuming and costs money, whereas he can just get the digital version of the book on internet. Furthermore, we don't have to move around with multiple physical books in bags, as digital files can be easily accessed from laptop or smartphone. Availability and accessibility is essential and with digitalization of books and newspapers, it become much easier than before.
Additionally, when buying a book we have to a certain amount to get it, since it costs money to print news or books on papers, whereas most of the books and newspapers are free to access, as it doesn't involve a large process of printing and transportation. A good example of this is when companies prints books they have to buy papers, inks and printing machines, and since they invest in these to make books, and books are published they have a price tag on them, which makes the revenue for companies to operate, whereas if when the company publish online they don't have to invest that much money into it.
In conclusion, the individuals will prefer online books and newspapers instead of buying printed ones, due to the wide availablity and accessibility of online books and newspapers, as well as the lower costs or sometime free of cost of books.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear: you support the view that online reading will replace printed purchases, and you give relevant reasons about convenience and cost. The examples of finding a specialist book and avoiding the expense of printing help explain these points. However, the response mainly argues for the advantages of online material and does not fully examine the prediction that nobody will buy printed books or newspapers in the future. The claim that most online content is free is also asserted rather than qualified or supported, and the conclusion repeats the main reasons without considering whether print may continue to have a role. Develop the extent of your agreement more precisely and support the central prediction with fuller reasoning.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs organised around accessibility and cost, and a conclusion. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Additionally,” and “In conclusion” make the progression explicit. This coherent arrangement is a strength. To make the links more flexible and precise, reduce repeated wording such as “books and newspapers” and “online,” and ensure each example is clearly tied back to the claim it supports. The second body paragraph contains a long chain of ideas about printing costs and company revenue, which makes the relationship between points less clear. Breaking it into shorter sentences and using clearer references would strengthen cohesion beyond the current level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “accessible,” “digital files,” “physically printed copies,” and “printing and transportation.” These choices allow you to explain the main benefits, but the range is limited by repeated terms such as “books,” “newspapers,” and “available,” and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate. For example, “available through online” is not idiomatic, and “get a book on A.I of a particular auther” is imprecise. There are also spelling errors, including “accessibilty,” “auther,” and “availablity.” Aim for more precise alternatives and check spelling carefully; this will make the argument sound more natural and reduce noticeable lexical errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, using structures such as “since they are now available online” and “whereas if when the company publish online.” This shows an effort to connect ideas, but complex sentences are often not controlled successfully, and errors recur in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “Some individual might argue” needs plural agreement or an article, “it become much easier” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, and “companies prints books” also has an agreement error. The final sentence of the cost paragraph is especially difficult to follow because several clauses are joined together. Practise building complex sentences with one clear main clause and check verb forms and agreement during revision.
