IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nobody will buy printed books or newspaper because every book and news will be available online without paying.

I strongly agree with this statement because in future artificial intelligence will be there.

To begin with, artificial intelligence will be there to replace books and newspapers. As in artificial intelligence you will have to give just a single prompt you will get what you need. In the near future everything will be available online for free. Books and newspapers trends will be vanished. Books and newspapers will become old trend. It will not be accepted by the people who use gadgets. An artificial intelligence will be able to explain you everything any book or news.

Moreover, not only artificial intelligence but also audio books feature will come in which book is flipping pages in your smartphone and you have to just listen to book.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You state a clear position—“I strongly agree”—and your points about AI providing information and audiobooks replacing some print use are relevant to the topic. However, the response addresses the question only partially: it does not explain in enough detail why people would stop buying printed books and newspapers, and it gives little consideration to whether free online access is realistic or whether print might remain valuable. The claim that AI will replace books is repeated rather than supported with examples or explanation. The response is also substantially below the required 250 words, which limits how fully you can develop your argument. To improve, explain two distinct reasons, support each with a specific example, and briefly acknowledge a counterargument before reaffirming your view.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure: an opening position followed by a paragraph beginning “To begin with” and another beginning “Moreover.” These markers help the reader identify the sequence of points, and the main topic remains apparent. However, the ideas do not develop into a clear overall progression. Several sentences repeat the same prediction that print will disappear, while the final audiobook point is introduced without explaining how it supports the claim about free online access. Connections between ideas are sometimes abrupt, and “Moreover, not only artificial intelligence but also…” is difficult to follow. Organise the essay into a clear introduction, developed body paragraphs with one main point each, and a conclusion; use linking phrases to show the relationship between claims rather than simply adding another point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the general topic, with relevant terms such as “artificial intelligence,” “prompt,” “online,” and “audiobooks.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are repeated, particularly “books and newspapers” and “will be there.” Some word choices and collocations are unnatural or unclear, such as “Books and newspapers trends will be vanished,” “old trend,” and “flipping pages in your smartphone.” These choices make parts of the argument less precise. Aim to use more accurate topic-specific phrases and vary how you refer to printed media and digital alternatives. For example, describe a shift in reading habits or explain that digital platforms may provide access to publications, rather than relying on broad claims that print will become an “old trend.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use mostly short, simple sentences, and the reader can generally understand your position. There is an attempt at a more complex construction in “not only artificial intelligence but also audio books feature will come,” but the structure is not controlled successfully. Errors occur frequently in sentence formation and grammatical patterns, including “In the near future everything will be available” (missing comma after the introductory phrase), “explain you everything” (incorrect verb pattern), and “you have to just listen to book” (article and word-order problems). The repeated “will be” constructions also limit grammatical variety. Practise accurate sentence patterns for predictions and explanations, and check articles, verb complements, and punctuation. Building a few correct complex sentences will make your reasoning clearer.
