IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The demand on printed books and newspapers has with no doubt decreased in recent years because of technological advancements. Some people claim that printed books and newspapers would completely disappear in the future. On the other hand, some think that there always would be readers who enjoy the experience of reading from printed books and newspapers, and I support this opinion.
First and foremost, reliance on the internet as the primary source of information has for sure affected the market of newspaper, and availability of e-books has reduced the demand on preinted books, especially when books and newspaper are available for free. Reading rates have also been affected by technological advancements in general, that made life run faster, and left less time for reading.
Although the aforementioned effects are real and cannot be neglected, I believe that many people enjoy reading from a printed book rather that from an e-book. From my personal experince, I find it really hard to finish a book when reading from my phone, while always beeing able to finish them if were printed. Moreover, printed books and newspaper offer an advantage that doesn't exist online, and it is credability. Publishing agencies on our behalf check how credible is an information before printing, or how likeley is it for a new book to succeed before they invest in it. Finally, payment ensures that authors get rewarded for their work and that motivates them to keep writing and publishing.
In conclusion, the demand on printed books has decreased, and the internet might have been the primary source of information. Yet, that doesn't mean that printed books and newspaper will disappear, as there always be people who prefere them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you support the view that printed publications will continue to have readers, despite the growth of online sources. You address both the decline in demand and reasons print may remain, including reading preferences, credibility, and support for authors. These are relevant points, but some are not fully explained. For example, the claim that publishers check credibility is broad and would be stronger with a specific explanation of how this differs from online information. The point about payment motivating authors is also introduced briefly rather than developed. To strengthen the response, explain how these reasons support your view that printed books and newspapers will not disappear, and address more directly the task’s prediction that everything will be available online for free.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your position, the body paragraphs present the effects of technology and reasons for print to remain, and the conclusion restates your view. Linking phrases such as “First and foremost,” “Although,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader, and the contrast between the two body paragraphs is easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. However, progression within paragraphs is occasionally loose: the point about faster lifestyles and reduced reading rates is added without being clearly connected to the central argument. Some transitions also feel formulaic. Use clearer links between each supporting point and your position, and make references such as “the aforementioned effects” more specific.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “technological advancements,” “primary source of information,” “availability,” and “credibility.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “preinted,” “experince,” “beeing,” “credability,” and “likeley.” There are also awkward collocations, such as “demand on printed books” and “reading from a printed book,” where more natural phrasing would be “demand for” and “reading a printed book.” Aim to check spelling carefully and learn common word partnerships. More precise vocabulary for distinguishing print from online publishing would also help you express the argument with greater control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concession beginning “Although the aforementioned effects are real” and a relative clause in “readers who enjoy the experience.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur in verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “there always would be readers” and “there always be people” need more accurate future constructions, while “if were printed” is missing a subject. The sentence beginning “Reading rates have also been affected” has an unclear relative clause, and “how credible is an information” uses an incorrect question structure within an indirect clause. Review verb patterns, articles, and indirect questions, then proofread each sentence for a complete and correctly formed clause.
